Apple has announced that pre-orders of its iPhone 5 topped two million in just 24 hours. This is more than double the previous record of one million held by the iPhone 4S.

The Telegraph has reported that Apple will very likely drop the iPhone 3GS once the company introduces the iPhone 5 next week and could possibly also add the 8GB version of the iPhone 4 into the lineup as the primary entry-level iPhone.
The next-gen iPhone will not be the only device making its mark on the 12th. It will be sharing the stage with "a string of new iPods" that includes at least two updated iPod versions and possibly a third, 9to5Mac reports.

A new report from Daring Fireball's John Gruber has alleged that Apple will only announce its small tablet option during the first or second week of October and not together with its iPhone 5 on the 12th of Sept as earlier speculated.
