Facebook has just launched a free VoIP call service via their Messenger app for iPhones. This feature is limited to U.S. iPhones for now, with no further information on when this feature will appear for users beyond U.S.

Microsoft has confirmed that Skype will be replacing Windows Live Messenger. The company plans to retire Windows Live Messenger in all countries except mainland China next Q1 2013.

Skype, the voice call and chat service provider that was acquired by Microsoft late last year for US$8.5 million, has announced a new Modern-style version of Skype for Windows 8. The app will be pre-installed on devices from 12 manufacturers, and be made available in the Windows Store come October 26.
