Sony Unveils New HD and 3D Home Projectors

Sony Delivers the Latest in HD Home Cinema Projector Technology

Sony’s new VPL-HW20 brings unrivaled cinematic viewing experience into the home

Asia-Pacific, September 30, 2010 – Sony today announces that it has expanded its range of home cinema projectors with the launch of the VPL-HW20. Utilizing Sony’s cinema quality SXRD panel technology, the VPL-HW20 provides home cinema aficionados a vibrant, bright Full HD picture for screens as big as 150”. Sony leads the world in digital cinema projection, and now its market-leading SXRD panel technology has been adapted for use in the VPL-HW20 for an immersive, compelling home cinema experience.

The VPL-HW20 gives its audience an optimal visual experience, whisking them away from the real world and drawing them into the visual fantasy onscreen. With Sony’s Advanced Iris 3™ technology, the VPL-HW20 projector delivers a picture quality that works like the human eye, responding dynamically to the level of light in each scene, and always selecting the optimum contrast. Advanced Iris 3™ can bring out the detail in darker sequences and prevent bright scenes from looking washed out, delivering an improved brightness of 1300 lumens. The result is stunningly high true dynamic contrast ratio of 80,000:1.

The improved contrast is the result of Sony’s updated 1920 x 1080 SXRD panels – built to deliver a consistently superior image, produced across the entire screen. The combination of three separate panels of 1920 x 1080 resolution means that the VPL-HW20 projector can deliver over 6.2 million pixels, approximately twice as much as other 720p HD-ready projectors in the market. The SXRD provides film-quality smoothness by minimizing the space between pixels for crisp and vivid images with unrivalled clarity.

“The launch of the VPL-HW20 is a testament of Sony’s leadership in delivering the best in high definition (HD) home cinema projection. Whether you are a home cinema connoisseur, armchair sports fanatic or avid gamer, the new home cinema projector creates a completely immersive and unrivalled cinematic viewing experience in the comforts and luxury of the home. Increasingly, consumers are demanding cinema quality projection in the home and Sony will continue to meet this need by staying ahead of the trend and employing laser-like focus on developing our home cinema suite of projectors,” said Mr. Tsuyoshi Nagata, General Manager for Presentation Display, Business & Professional Products, Sony Electronics Asia Pacific.

The new VPL-HW20 is also equipped with the All Range Crisp Focus (ARC-F) lens which offers a 1.6x manual zoom and both vertical and horizontal adjustment, simplifying projector set-up and helping users achieve a good picture in a variety of environments. In order to generate a picture that is optimized both in the accuracy of the contrast and the precision of the color reproduction, the VPL-HW20’s digital processing system consists of eight separate stages of image enhancement – carried out in real time – each with a specialized function.

A highly effective cooling system means that fan noise is kept to an absolute minimum (as low as 20dB). With an ultra-quiet fan, users can watch even the quietest parts of movies with no audible distractions from the projector.

The VPL-HW20 will be available from October 2010 in Asia Pacific through Sony’s authorized installers and specialty dealers. For more information on Sony’s projectors, please visit:
