Man Uses Android Phone And Nintendo Wii Controllers To Fly Like A Bird
From Icarus to Da Vinci, man has long dreamed of self powered flight. Dutch mechanical engineer, Jarno Smeets may have made it a reality!
Smeets studied the take off and flight patterns of large-winged birds like the albatross to come up with his invention, which uses an HTC Wildfire S phone, a pair of Nintendo Wii Motion Plus remotes, and a set of gigantic glider-like wings.
At the heart of Smeets' design is his HTC Wildfire S phone. The phone is connected to two Nintendo Wii Motion Plus controllers and a Wii Nunchuk which Smeets holds in his hands.
The controllers measure acceleration and motion and sends that information to the phone which processes and computes the corresponding motor output needed to give Smeets enough lift to stay in the air. The phone then sends that information to a Seeduino ADK microcontroller, which moves Smeet's glider-like wings appropriately.
With the Wii Controllers and phone working in tandem, essentially all Smeets has to do to lift off is flap his arms up and down while running:
