Japan Display Builds World's Highest Resolution LCD Panel
The race to have the highest resolution display panel in the world has reached a whole new level with Japan Display announcing that it has developed a prototype 651ppi LCD panel.
According to DiginfoTV, the display was first announced in June 2012 and has a resolution of 1,280 x 800 pixels packed into a screen size of 2.3-inch. The resolution is reportedly double that of many high-definition smartphone displays.
Japan Display - "We wondered just how high a resolution we could achieve using our LTPS technology, so we decided to make a world-class display. As a result, this display has the world's highest resolution of 651ppi."
"The resolution of the human eye is said to be about 300ppi. A 5 inch Full HD display has higher resolution, so it may be close to the limit of the human eye. At that level, sensitivity becomes relevant. So for example, objects that appear three-dimensional look extremely clear. We think that, if we give displays even higher resolution, images may look more realistic."
The display is said to be free of artifacts such as jagged lines and characters, which can be seen in displays that use larger pixels. With a pixel pitch of 39μm, images can be displayed with a resolution comparable to that of film-based photographs. Japan Display will consider specific products and applications according to emerging needs.
One of the most widely discussed topics nowadays is about the display resolutions of mobile devices. Apple first introduced the Retina display in the iPhone 4 in June 2010. Retina is a marketing term used to describe a certain level of pixel density that the human eye is unable to notice pixelation from a typical viewing distance. Till today, the iPhone 4, 4S and 5 all have a standard pixel density of 326 ppi. Two other companies have since surpassed Apple, which are:
- Nokia Lumia 920: 4.5-inch IPS TFT / 1,280 x 768 pixels / 332 ppi
- Windows Phone 8X by HTC: 4.3-inch Super LCD 2 / 1,280 x 720 pixels / 342 ppi
- HTC J Buttery: 5-inch Super LCD 3 / 1080p / 440 ppi
Well, it seems that Japan Display has climbed to the top of the chart with its whopping 651ppi LCD panel. Hopefully, it won't be a long wait for Japan Display to unveil products sporting that display for the consumer market.
