Be Careful What You Share on Facebook (Unless You Want to Sell Lubricant)

Be careful what you share on Facebook! Nick Bergus found a giant 55 gallon of lubricant for sale on Amazon, and posted it on Facebook together with a funny line:

A 55-gallon drum of lube on Amazon. For Valentine’s Day. And every day. For the rest of your life.

A week later his friends noticed that his post returned as a Facebook Sponsored Story in their news feeds. Sponsored Stories are ads that are posted in users' news feeds, the page you see first whenever you log into Facebook. Sponsored Story ads will only appear if users have already 'liked' the company's page, enabling them to post updates on users' feeds. Companies can then promote the activity of their fans - like Bergus on Amazon.

The key takeaway? Be careful what you post on Facebook - or which company you like - as you'll never know when you'll become part of a Sponsored Story ad.
