Apple iPhone 4S Reportedly Comes with 512MB RAM (Again)
Apple's iPhone 4S has already been revealed, and with it, we know where the major hardware improvement comes from - an updated Apple A5 dual-core 1GHz processor. The mystery, that always accompanies every iPhone or iPad launch, is the amount of RAM loaded onto the device.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Donald Mustard, the creative director for Chair Entertainment which will be launching Infinity Blade 2 on iOS very soon, was quoted:
“I’m still shocked that, with the iPhone 4S, I’m literally running around with a 1080p video camera in my pocket, with an eight megapixel camera, 64GB of hard drive space and an A5 chip with 512MB of memory. This is a really powerful computer, right?”
And that, answers the RAM question for the iPhone 4S. RAM plays a pivotal role in every smartphone, especially in the areas of multi-tasking. A typical mid-range smartphone usually has 512MB RAM inserted within, while higher performance devices such as the HTC Sensation and Evo 3D packs a stronger punch with a higher RAM capacity of 768MB and 1GB respectively.
However, the amount of RAM isn't the only deciding factor for a smooth multi-tasking perofrmance. The overall experience is still determined by the way the mobile OS handles apps in the background, and the way each mobile OS works for multi-tasking is vastly different based on the basic coding and the way an app is designed to draw resources.
Still, it would have been great if the iPhone 4S got bumped up in the RAM department, even if it was to the next step at 768MB. Meanwhile, we'll be waiting to see if the 512MB claim maide by Mustard holds true, when iFixit gets a hold of the iPhone 4S and conduct their usual dismantling.
