Apple, Google, Nokia and Qualcomm Battle for InterDigital Patents
Apple, Google, Nokia and Qualcomm opened a new front in the patent war by expressing their interests in acquiring InterDigital, a telecommunications company which has about 8,8000 wireless technology patents.
According to SlashGear, the shares of InterDigital, which has a market value of $3 billion, increased by 12.2 percent at one point as the bidding is expected to be very intense. The auction has been postponed to a later date as first-round bidders requested extra time to complete due diligence.
With more reports of tech companies suing each other for alleged patent infringements, it makes sense for companies to acquire as many patents as possible to protect themselves in a dog-eat-dog world. However, we wonder if tech companies should focus their resources on bringing more innovation to the industry instead of getting embroiled in the patent disputes.
