Battery Life and Portability Benchmarking

Peering In

Nothing has really changed for the Eee PC 900 in terms of hardware; it's still using the same Intel Celeron M ULV 900Mhz CPU processor as its former models. RAM has been upgraded to 1GB like the Eee PC 8G, but suffers from a reduced memory bandwidth with 400Mhz memory compared to the 533/667MHz of the Eee PC 8G. Storage capacity, as noted earlier, has also been improved to 12GB and 20GB respectively via the use of a PCIe slot inside the unit.

Battery Life And Portability Index

The current crop of Netbooks that we've been reviewing lack a DVD drive, so we've resorted to looping a high-definition video at our normal settings of 50% brightness and volume. Power sapping features like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth were also turned off for this test. Power saving measures were also tweaked to prevent the unit from cutting out the test prematurely before the notebook.

As you can see, thanks to the higher capacity 5800mAH battery, the Eee PC 900 lasted for around 225 minutes on our tests, which is a pretty long time for watching movies. Our results based on our portability test gave the Eee PC 900 an impressive ratio of 3.681 - beating its rival, the HP Mini-Note, by a wide margin. This is a figure we've not come across in a long time, so the longevity of the Eee PC 900 coupled with its petite dimensions and light weight is bound to be a real boon for netizens on the move.
