DVD-ROM Benchmark

First, we start off with some figures to better understand the read capabilities of the ASUS BC-1205PT using Nero DVD Speed. This is tested with two commercially pressed DVD-ROMs (a single-layer and a dual-layer), four recordable DVD media (DVD-R. DVD-RW, DVD+R and DVD+RW) and a dual layer commercially pressed Blu-ray movie.

Since we tested the BC-1205PT with a dual layer BD-ROM, the maximum speed for it is capped at 2x, which was what we got. As for the other media, we found this ASUS drive to follow its specifications closely, with top speeds that matched its claims. Like another Blu-ray drive that we saw before, the CPU usage was rather high for DVD media, averaging more than 40%, which put it more than twice that of a typical DVD writer. For BD media however, it was reasonably low, which bodes well for its playback capabilities. As for the access speeds, the ASUS was also slightly slower than the new current generation DVD writers by around 100ms for a full disc. So don't expect the drive to respond at light speeds.
