Composed of a cylindrical anodized aluminum woofer and two satellites that twist off at each end, the BoomTube 2.1 speaker system screams for attention. With a matte-aluminum finish, the design and build is solid and leaves no question about its quality. The satellites generally sit elegantly on either side of the woofer, revealing bare speaker cones which might be a worry, as they are generally the most vulnerable parts of an audio setup. Grills could have been included in the design to protect the sensitive cones from sharp objects or excited fingers that can't get enough of the BoomTube, especially with it going places.

Behind Every Successful Speaker is a Sub-Woofer

Boasting four 2-inch drivers with dual neodymium magnets, skeptics would be stopped short the moment BoomTube floods the room with an amazing reproduction of Astrud Gilberto's soulful jazzy voice – all this only at 75% volume output. Rated at a combined 40 watts of music power, the amplifiers presented details with little or no distortion even when turned up to the max, so imagine the potential of this little monster!

Unfortunately, the BoomTube lacks when playing a fast track with plenty of bass. Those hoping to see glass panels explode in a fury of thumping bass with their adrenalin charged tracks would be disappointed. The bass is light, and can barely be felt standing five feet away, regardless of how hard the tiny woofer tube is pushing air. The woofer's effort though, is definitely commendable for its size and still adds distinct flavor to slower pieces that emphasize on clarity.
Music on the Move

Powered by a lithium-ion battery, the BoomTube can serenade an entire room for an average of five hours on one charge – perfect for those mini functions or a multimedia presentation meant to impress your clients. For longer occasions, the speakers can run off the mains with the adapter plugged in to provide unlimited listening pleasure. Unfortunately, the BoomTube cannot be charged and used simultaneously. If it goes flat, a full charge without functioning as speakers is required.

Pretty Little Details

Left/Right output, DC input as well as 3.5mm jacks line up along the middle of the cylinder. All you have to do is to plug in the provided audio cables into their respective audio jacks and you would quickly form a compact 2.1 sound system. The 3.5mm audio output would be especially convenient for those who appreciate the BoomTube as a permanent sound system for their PCs and occasionally opt to use headphones. Take note however that the multiple wires required for the 2.1 audio system to function can get messy without a management system. This could have been solved by a retractable-wire system that would have made the BoomTube even more attractive.

Final Thoughts

The BoomTube is a portable speaker system that could make your client presentation stand-out, warm-up guest receptions with soulful ambience, or just create envious LAN party mates. More then anything else, the BoomTube H201 excels as a conversation piece with its striking resemblance to a matte-silver bazooka tube. It's simply hard to ignore the BoomTube's loud and clear presence whether it's turned on or not.

Page 1 of 1

‹ Prev

<fieldset style="display:none;"></fieldset> Loud in More Ways than One

Next ›

 // window.addEvent ('domready', function () { var container = document.getElement ('#product-review'), content = container && container.getElement ('.content'), pagination = container && container.getElement ('.pagination'), form = pagination && pagination.getElement ('form'), menu = form && form.getElement ('.page-selector'), links = { prev: pagination && pagination.getElement ('.prev a'), next: pagination && pagination.getElement ('.next a') }, page = -1, desc = 'Page {curPage} of {lastPage}' ; // Tag as Javascript-enabled pagination.addClass ('js'); menu.addEvent ('change', function (e) { var curPage = this.selectedIndex + 1, lastPage = this.length, url = this.get ('value'), pageContent = container && container.getElement ('.page') ; // Disable controls menu.set ('disabled', 'disabled').blur (); if (pageContent) pageContent.setStyle ('opacity', .5); new Request.HTML ({ 'url': url, 'method': 'get', 'link': 'cancel', 'update': content, 'onSuccess': function () { // Update controls menu.erase ('disabled'); links.prev .set ('href', menu.getChildren ('option')[(curPage > 1)? curPage - 2: curPage - 1].get ('value')) [(curPage > 1)?
