Windows Phone 8 & Windows 8 to Get Unity Game Engine Support
According to Edge, Unity, the game engine that’s supported by almost every mobile/gaming platform (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, iOS, Android - you name it) is coming to Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8.
This was revealed by Unity Technologies CEO David Helgason at Unite 2012:
“The Unity community has been asking for access to Windows Phones and have been eagerly anticipating the release of Windows 8. We’re happy to announce that we will support both.”
This is certainly great news for the Redmond company ahead of the availability of Windows Phone 8 devices, as it increases the possibility of mobile game developers developing for the new platform. For developers not wanting to go the Silverlight/XNA route, it reduces the friction of releasing their games on Windows Phone 8, as Unity support makes it easier for them to port existing games over. According to Helgason, Unity is used by 53% of all mobile game developers. And of course, at the end of the day, if there are more quality games on Windows Phone 8, the users stand to gain as well.
Unity support for Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 is expected to arrive later this year as part of Unity 4 release cycle.
