Retina Display for Second-Gen iPad Mini in the Works

While Apple is working hard to build more iPad Minis to meet demands, its display suppliers are said to be planning a step ahead.
According to DoNews, sources in China claim that AU Optronics (one of the various display panel makers for the iPad Mini) is preparing to mass produce 7.9-inch Retina display panels with a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels by second half of 2013. The pixel density works out to be 324ppi. In comparison, the third and fourth generation iPads have a pixel density of 264ppi.
Apple has come under severe criticisms for equipping the iPad Mini with a low resolution display (1,024 x 768 pixels) and charging premium prices when the market has more affordable alternatives such as the Google Nexus 7 (1,280 x 720 pixels). In our review of the iPad Mini, we also highlighted how text and graphics looked a little pixelated.
There is no doubt that future generations of iPad Mini will come with higher resolution or Retina displays but it remains to be seen if Apple is able to maintain costs and offer the tablets at more competitive prices.
