Entry-Level US$99 Nexus 7 to Employ Single-Core 800MHz Processor?
For Google to price its rumored entry-level Nexus 7 at US$99, some corners have to be cut and it seems that the processor will receive a massive downgrade.
According to DigiTimes, Taiwan-based supply chain makers claim that Google is using an ARM-architecture single-core processor from China-based WonderMedia Technologies. It is believed to feature an 800MHz Cortex A9 CPU and a Mali-400 GPU.
The current Nexus 7 is powered by NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core 1.2GHz processor and a 12-core GeForce GPU. While specs ain't everything, we wonder if future Android versions require more powerful processors in order to run properly.
Moreover, providing an optimal user experience should be Google's top priority if it wants to be on par with Apple iOS and Windows Phone. However, a growing user base can also mean that developers are more inclined to code tablet-optimized apps for the Android ecosystem.
