Canon to be First Company to Get Own Top Level Domain Name

Get ready for a new wave of domain names online that will change web conventions. The organization responsible for this, ICANN has given the green light to increasing the number of top level domain names, allowing organizations and corporations to pay for the right to have URLs like http://canon for instance. Canon is one of the first to sign up for the $185,000 application and ICANN expects to finalize the rules by 2011.

Wired.com - Canon announced Wednesday it intends to be the first company to say goodbye to .com and buy its own top-level domain, taking advantage of ICANN’s decision to broadly widen the number of top-level names. If — or rather when — this starts happening, web address conventions may never be the same.
