Canon and Olympus Hold Largest Camera Market Share in Japan Last Year

Research firm BCN has compiled a list of data from 22 online and physical retailers to reveal the top manufacturers in Japan's domestic electronics market. It appears that for the smartphone category, Apple retains its top spot despite competition from Sharp and Sony. Canon has managed to grab some DSLR market share from Nikon, with its market share growing from 46 to 53 percent.
However, it seems Nikon's fortunes seem to be picking up on the mirrorless system camera front. Despite having the lion's share of the mirrorless system camera market, Olympus sees its share eroding due to stiff competition from Nikon's 1 Series cameras, which amounted to 11.2 percent of mirrorless body unit sales - probably thanks to the Nikon J1 being the best-selling mirrorless camera in Japan in 2012.

For TV manufacturers, it seems the Japanese still favor local brands with Sharp, Toshiba and Panasonic still dominating the market. While Apple, Canon and Olympus have the largest shares in the Japanese domestic electronics market, they can't rest on their laurels as their shares are all dropping even though they have managed to retain their top spots in 2012.
