HardWareZone | 21 July, 2008 10:50
Not many people know this, but the Internet works on a variety of mediums, from wireless, telephone lines, satellites, to something that has been around since the days of the original mode of telephone communication - cables on the ocean's floor.
The backbone of the Internet is still based on this legacy infrastructure, as the Internet itself rides upon the telephone network. Hence how last year's earthquake off the coast of Taiwan cut off many Asians from the Internet. Until more cables are built, or other communication solutions are installed, these current infrastructures you see here are what enables you to read the words you see right now on screen.
