Intel Makes Hard Drives?
HardWareZone | 21 July, 2008 10:50
Not content being the Supernova Protector of the Earth when it comes to computer chips, processor titan Intel is now going to make Flash-based Solid-State Drives (SSD - not Super Star Destroyer-lah!) as well!
This throws a monkey's wrench into rival SSD makers like Samsung and Toshiba, who are trying to capture the next-generation storage solution to replace aging hard drives with large-capacity flash-based solutions.
Will Intel be the first and the dominant SSD solution? Or will they fight neck to neck with established rivals claiming the same pie? As people look to SSDs to solve the slow woes of hard drives of today, upcoming notebooks and maybe even desktops are ripe picking for the SSD contenders.
Intel will ship their 80 and 160GB SSDs very soon, so stay tuned for the fight. All these are thanks to IM Flash Technologies, a joint venture between Intel and Micron, maker of high-speed memory.
