Whether it stands for Velocity Raptor or it's referring to the Velociraptor dinosaur, either way, the Western Digital Raptor series of internal desktop hard drive is known for its speed with its 10,000RPM spin rate, over standard 7200RPM drives.
The Raptor X was the enhanced SATA version with 150GB over the 74GB PATA, and the X also secured itself as the world's fastest desktop drive. It's also the only drive to come with a windowed option so you could see it in action!
Now, WD is taking the next step with the VelociRaptor. It's shrunk to a notebook sized-drive, comes in 300GB over the previous 150GB Raptor X, and still maintains the 10KRPM speed!
With the battle of internal drives moving to SSD (Solid-State Drives), based on Flash technology, WD is keeping up the race by shrinking their famous Raptor line to the SSD level. Will it be on par, overtake, or slug behind the SSD race?
We'll let you know when we get our hands on a VelociRaptor!
