NFS: ProStreet Tuning Guide Part 4 Rev 1: Drift!

zerotau | 21 July, 2008 10:50

Ah, the magical art of going sideways and maintaining it for more than a second has always mesmerized this one, and thus, I present to you this first part in a  on drift settings in Need For Speed: ProStreet.  Contrary to popular belief, the drift physics in PS is eons better than Carbon or Most Wanted (even if it didn't have a drift mode, you could do the same on the vast expanses of grass!). Anyways, off the rants and into the action!

I used a S15 Silvia because its one of my personal favs and because its cheap!

Yeah, I nearly forgot to mention that this guide is suitable for those thrillseekers planning to drift on sweeping courses like Autopolis, Texas World Speedway and the likes as the Silvia does the job BEAUTIFULLY. I actually wanted to embed a YouTube video but since the service is a tad crappy today, ill just show off some smooth moves with similar (no radical changes) settings.

Drifitng is all about car control, no matter how much power you have, you'll end up in a ditch, or even worse, dead. Prioritize your upgrades as such - Suspension, tyres, engine, transmission, brakes. To note, my S15 has only 300-odd horses, check out the pic on my EA Nation ID page for more info.

Engine - set is as linear as possible. You Do Not want power spikes that'll ruin your drift. I advanced cam timing because drifitng is done in the higher rev spectrum unless you're playing with a muscle car which can be suicidal! XD No Tokyo Drift-esque moves here!

Brakes -  I find that these are the best brake settings on any car. Not too hard, not too soft with perfect balance that won't throw you off. Then again if you drive aggressively, you can always slide the balance to the right for a more tail-happy car.

Gearing - You won't go fast while sliding; the highest speed recorded mid-slide for me is about 180kph. Acceleration is crucial here thanks to the rather dumb starts where your wheel keeps spinning till its 53kph.

Suspension - The single most important part of your car when it comes to drifting. I'll let the screenies do the talking.

So there ya go. Watch out for part 4.2, the absolutely last part to this guide series, where we tackle the art of drifting in tight corners. I'll try post up the videos as soon as YouTube gets their uploader fixed :X and as usual, feel free to ask any questions in the comment box!

Update: Video UP!

Added!!

Now you can also drift though the tight corners and valleys of NFS: Prostreet!

By tuning the castor settings to the left, your car is much more stable on tighter turns. Also, if you want to eliminate snap oversteer, set the rear anti-rollbar looser than the original settings without worrying about rolling your car!

While drifitng in tighter turns, you'll need to maintain a sharp angle of attack because you'll lose quite a bit of speed in smaller corners, so do not be afraid to stiffen up the suspension even more if you feel like it!

Here's two videos that were done using tighter settings on the same Silvia S15!!

thanks for the advice. I'm going after The drift king soon but i can't seem to get a hold of drifting. I've never tuned my drifting cars before because i don't really know what to do. thanx for the gear ratios i've been making them taller thinking that i could get more speed but i guess i was very wrong.

does this work with the 240sx?

Comment Icon 240sx, performance

zerotau | 09/01/2008, 17:22

its almost about the same for the 240sx, you'll just need to soften up the front suspension or stiffen up the rear a tad bit.

beat the drift king with this setting? yeah, done that twice XD

performance levels are just regular level 3 parts. nothing out of the ordinary. you do not need more power for drifting, but better tires are good.
