Unwrapped! The HP OfficeJet J5780 All-in-One Office Printer

Admir | 05 July, 2007 00:35

Hi guys. Today, we've received a new printer from HP. It's their OfficeJet J5780 and we have to say, it's a pretty nifty all-in-one device for offices. So what does it have? Aside from color printing, it's got scanning capabilities and along this line, it can also copy and scan multiple documents via its auto document feeder. It's also a fax machine that can transmit up to 33.6Kbps by the way, but it has no handset built-in. You'll have to plug one in at the rear through the phone extension interface. So, enough words, let's start the excitement of unraveling the package!

After cutting through the tape and unfolding the flaps, we're greeted by documents. The CDs bundled here are the HP software and drivers for the Windows and Apple OS X platform. The large guide below is the quick starter guide (guys, always read this first!.) There's also a manual, registration card and notices, typical of such products.

After a bit more scavenging, here are the other peripherals that came with the printer. There's an HP adapter and power plug, two bundled HP inks – black and white, and color, a modem cable, a USB data cable, and what appears to be a holster to contain partially used ink.

This is the orientation of the printer before being unboxed.

The printer in its full form right out of the box! Notice the stickers to keep the plastic parts in place while being shipped to various countries. The printer looks very professional and can seriously kick some serious office tasks off your head and into something tangible. The printer can print and copy up to 30 pages per minute.

We opened up the lid to the flatbed glass scanner. This model can readily accept A4 documents. The glass scanner's lid has an additional hinge for it to accept thicker source materials like magazines. Its optical scanner can optically scan up to 2400 x 4800 DPI with a color depth of 48-bits. The ADF scanner sits on the flat-bed scanner's lid and can accept up to 35 sheets to scan.

Here are the main interface ports found on the printer. From left to right, there's a USB port, an HP standard power adapter port, a phone line interface and an extension phone interface. Remember this is also a fax machine, so this is expected already.

Unwrapping the ink cartridges, this model uses HP ink cartridge no. 74 (black and white) and 75 (color.) We turned on the printer and installed the ink cartridges.

When you first turn on the printer, it will let you assign the language to use for its menu interface and will print out an alignment sheet. After printing it out, the printer will ask you to feed it to its ADF scanner, which it will scan and use the data to set the printer's alignment automatically.

Some first impressions:

It's straight forward to use, easy to setup and looks quite professional. Even the sound it makes fits the office environment! Software was also a cinch to install, but remember, this is an office appliance, and half the time, it's not about printing from a computer. The ADF scanner will prove useful for those with a lot of scanning requirements (and believe us, it's not a good idea to waste a lot of time keeping an eye on the flat-bed scanner just to finish scanning your hundred documents.) General document printing was quite fast too, but this will obviously slow down when it comes to photographic material and when color and quality enters the picture. We're just a bit concerned of the printer inks: for an office appliance, they're a bit small. Then again, HP has released a new ink branding recently to specifically target different user groups – from light to heavy ones, so be sure to inquire about it at your nearest HP store or HP's hotline at 1-800 1441-6688.

That's it for today's session! We hope that satisfied your appetite to get to know what products come with out of the box and not just through spec sheets!
