Carl Zeiss Makes Monster Lens

DidipusRex | 13 October, 2006 17:05

Legendary optics company Carl Zeiss, makers of the Vario Tessar, Vario Contar and other lenses of renown, has just announced the Zeiss Apo Sonnar T* 1700mm F4 lens, probably the largest non-military telephoto lens in existence. Weighing in at an anorexic 256kg (that's sarcasm, folks), the Apo Sonnar T* is a custom job, with some rich gent in Qatar as the probable owner. It attaches to a Hasselblad medium format and promises to be the ultimate lens for voyeur photography.

What's the price tag on a lens like this? Considering that the uncut glass for a single element of this size costs about as much as a luxury car,and that the Apo Sonnar T* consists of 15 such elements, the cost must be a princely sum.

If you're REALLY serious about your photography and want to buy one of these, check out the article here.
