WD My Book, My Passport And SmartWare Launch: External HDD Array Extended

littlelion | 29 September, 2009 13:45

In 2000, the first commercial USB flash drive had a scant storage capacity of 8 megabytes. Today, you can buy a 256 gigabyte USB flash drive in simple terms. The big leap took less than a decade. Mechanical hard disk drives (HDDs) took more than 50 years to reach 256 gigabytes. Certainly, USB flash drives and other flash-based external storage devices are fast becoming more advanced than ever before.

But in spite of this rapid development, external HDDs remain popular among consumers, mainly because they are less expensive than their non-mechanical counterparts. Nevertheless, manufacturers such as Western Digital (WD) are working zealously to make external HDDs not only price-attractive, but appealing in terms of physique, storage size and features. WD realized that way of thinking by unveiling their latest line of My Book and My Passport HDDs, along with the new SmartWare software.

Western Digital My Book World Edition: Do Not Judge My Book By Its Cover!

littlelion | 22 May, 2009 13:37

From the outside, the latest My Book World Edition appears similar to the other My Book releases which Western Digital introduced in the past. However, we assure you that it is not. Color white aside, it is an entirely different mammoth of storage unleashed from WD’s stable, arriving with either 1TB or 2TB of hard disk drive storage.

Western Digital’s choice of color makes the My Book World Edition a classy attraction to Apple Mac fans. OS-wise, it’s compatible with Mac OS X Tiger or Leopard. Nonetheless, it’s well-matched with PC users, since it works with Microsoft Windows XP and Vista as well.

A Hard Drive Within A Hard Drive

LordM | 19 February, 2007 17:32

I don't know if you guys know about this, but there is actually a way for you to have a portable HDD without the need for purchasing those branded ones in the market today.

It goes something like this:

1) Purchase a 2.5" or a 3.5" HDD

2) Buy an external enclosure for it (the 2.5" HDD only needs the USB for power, while the 3.5" HDD is more 'complex' and needs an external power supply)

3) Voila! Instant portable HDD for you.

This method is cheaper and can will save you a lot of money in the process. But of course, HDD enclosures in the market look dull and boring. So, why not give it a fancy look?

While this product may look like an ordinary HDD, the thing about it is that it is not. It is actually a 2.5" Hard Drive Disk Case for sale at geekstuff4u.

Here are the specs for it...

Uses 2.5" IDE HDD to USB2.0/1.1, is compatible with OS Windows98SE/Me/2000/XP and MacOS 9.2, it's dimensions are 84×134×12mm and weighs 68g.

Of course, the HDD is not included, but I guess purchasing a 120 GB 2.5" HDD won't be a problem right?

You can see more of this product at the geekstuff4u website and is sold for $24.68. Here's a link to make it easier for all of you readers.

Quotable Quotes: "I Help People Watch Porn"

LordM | 04 December, 2006 10:41

While there may be some who do not share their thoughts and ideas to others, there will still be a handful of people who just say the cold, hard, truth.

In an interview conducted by CNN, a CEO said that they're building a product that helps people watch porn. Yes, there is no typo there. A CEO said he is helping people watch PORN.

Would you know who this person is? Here's a clue...

Seagate's 100GB PHD (Personal Hard Drive)

Netolyer | 10 August, 2006 12:27

Seagate's 100GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive

The Seagate PHD beside WD's Passport PHD

We recently received this from Millenium Computer Technology Corp., the official distributor for Seagate's retail products in the Philippines.

Coming in variations of 40, 60, 80, 100, 120 and 160GB, this PHD is similar to WD's Passport and Maxtor's OneTouch mini line-up. Running at 5400RPM, the 40GB variant comes with 2MB cache, while the rest ship with 8MB of cache.

In terms of size, the Seagate PHD is slightly smaller in height, but larger in girth and thickness than WD's Passport. The chrome-plated aluminum enclosure seems more rugged than WD's aluminum and rubber enclosure, but the IO ports are left exposed to the elements. As expected, the Seagate PHD is powered via a USB 1.0 and above port, with accomodations for a Y-cable (plugged into another USB port) or external power supply should your ports not have enough juice. Lastly, models with capacities of 100GB and above come with BounceBack Express for quick and easy back-ups.

The 100GB version has a suggested retail price of PhP 9,959.
