HP Managed Print Services: Clearing Out The Clutter Of Document Management

littlelion | 22 September, 2009 13:53

Without doubt, Hewlett-Packard is among the top brands which almost every consumer could easily relate with printing. Such a premise is no longer surprising, taking into account that HP printers are nearly as ubiquitous as a sheet of paper. This is what we are seeing at the consumer base. But what most of us are probably not aware of is that HP has also achieved that similar level of omnipresence at the enterprise plateau. For this reason, the Imaging and Printing Group (IPG) of HP is taking the enterprise business segment seriously.

In the Asia Pacific and Japan region alone, the IPG has slated several solutions in the pipeline to cater to the needs of the enterprise market in terms of document management. These were unraveled and discussed in full detail during the recent regional press conference held by the IPG led by Mr. Bruce Dahlgren, Senior Vice President for Managed Enterprise Solutions (MES); Mr. Chris Morgan, Senior Vice President; and Mr. Pierre Mirlesse Vice President for MES.

Why Serious?

For years, enterprises have been bombarded with a tremendous amount of data and information, a situation which can be best described as “information explosion”. Projections estimate that digital content doubles every eighteen (18) months and is expected to grow up to ten (10) times by 2012. In spite of the availability of numerous document digitizing solutions, enterprises are pushed farther away from realizing the vision of a paperless office. Converting content from analog to digital form adds 200 billion of printed pages every year. Enterprises have been exhausting both their imaging and IT assets in facing the dilemma, resulting to increased cost, reduced productivity, and negative impact on the environment.

Consolidation, Not Dissection

At present, enterprises are resolved on dissecting their problems with document management into four components, namely hardware, software, infrastructure, and system integrators. This kind of understanding led enterprises to pick different vendors and assign each of them to handle the components separately. This approach is effective in some way, but not without flaws. For instance, if there is a compatibility issue between hardware and software, the enterprise must contact both the hardware vendor and software vendor, who, as independent entities, are responsible only with their own product or solution. Normally, a joint effort between two vendors is fee-based and time-consuming. Of course, the time spent in troubleshooting the problem is equivalent to downtime which slows down workflows in general.

Comprehending that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, HP is treating document management issues as one, consolidating hardware, software, infrastructure, and system integrators into a single unit. With an aim of delivering a consolidated solution to enterprises, the IPG developed a new business unit, the Managed Enterprise Solutions (MES), who will carry out the Managed Print Services (MPS) program for clients. With MPS, MES is helping enterprises to improve business results, cut down on costs, streamline workflows, and reduce environmental footprint.

A comparison between HP's new sub-brands for the LaserJet lineup: the Professional and the Enterprise.

HP Universal Print Driver 5.0 includes HP EasyColor, which optimizes color printing and improves print performance for image-intensive documents. In addition, users can set printing devices to automatic two-sided printing to reduce paper waste. Features in HP Web Jetadmin and Universal Print Driver software can set an organization’s printers to duplex in a few simple keystrokes, saving up to 25 percent in paper costs.

HP And Canon Partnership

One segment of the conference that drew the participants’ attention was about the collaboration between HP and Canon. Based on the agreement, HP will expand its product portfolio with select Canon multi-function devices (MFDs) for high-volume customers in the enterprise market, while Canon will provide servicing and support for the MFDs. An additional limitation, this is only available for HP MPS customers in North America, Western and Eastern Europe, and for their affiliates operating outside these geographies on a case by case basis, including Asia Pacific and Japan.

HP's portfolio of enterprise customers is comprised of those entities belonging to the public sector, manufacturing, distribution, services industry, and healthcare.

All-in-one is all the rage these days and HP, through its IPG and the newly-established MES business unit, is in parallel with the trend. At the enterprise level, the company is zealously positioning itself as a one-stop shop with an all-in-one solution up its sleeve. The MPS program is not yet available in the Philippines. Nonetheless, the local arm of HP IPG is offering the Smart Print Services which presents a consolidated solution in the same way. Visit www.hp.com/apac/enterpriseprint/services or contact Mr. Jerome Nicdao (jerome.nicdao@hp.com), Commercial and Enterprise Manager of HP IPG Philippines for more details.
