Creative Aurvana DJ Circumaural Headphone: The DJ Is In The House

littlelion | 01 September, 2009 15:33

Creative Technology has been known to most of us as one of pioneers in the PC audio market since the early days of Windows. During the 1990s, the Sound Blaster, Creative’s label for its line of audio cards, was considerably the de facto standard. At the end of the past decade, the company became a major competitor in the portable media player (PMP) arena when it had introduced the NOMAD, under which the MuVo and ZEN sprang out. Eventually, Creative launched the Aurvana lineup of earphones and headphones.

One of the members of the Aurvana’s band of audio gears is the Aurvana DJ, a circumaural headphone, which according to Creative and as what its name aptly suggests, is designed for club DJs and home studio mixers. Given such types of audience, we can clearly see here that the DJ is intended for those who have above-average sensitivity when it comes to sound and music.

The DJ is equipped with a pair of leatherette padding which makes the headset comfortable to wear, and induces better isolation from background noise. However, in a muggy country like ours, it is understood that the kind of material employed can easily get warm and collect sweat, particularly under extended use. Nevertheless, the leatherette paddings are detachable and can be washed if necessary.

For additional comfort, the DJ also comes with an adjustable headband, wrapped in plush leatherette, to suit all possible head sizes that you can think of. The headband is connected to the earcups through pivots. The earcups can be easily swiveled if necessary, a feature that is useful for DJs who must regularly monitor ambient noise inside a partying club. The closed-back design of the earcups is elegantly crafted in brushed metal and diamond-cut finishing.

Inside the earcups, the DJ makes use of driver units composed of 40mm neodymium magnets with copper-clad aluminum wire (CCAW) voice coils. The DJ has a frequency response of 20Hz-20kHz. Attached to the left earcup is the 1.4-3m coiled oxygen-free copper cable that ends up with a 3.5mm gold-plated stereo miniplug. With all of these components minus the box, the DJ weighs 385g.

For testing, we had played a set of ten songs which we deem will underscore the strengths and weaknesses of the DJ. We listened to the songs using the headset with an Apple iPod and a notebook embedded with the Realtek HD audio chip.

In Andrea Bocelli’s execution of “Con Te Partiro”, we can say that everything is relatively flawless, starting from the solemn sound of the symphony instruments up to the immaculate voice of Bocelli. The same observation goes for rendition of “The Prayer” by Charlotte Church and Josh Groban. The DJ made a good start with the piece “Roundabout”, but as soon as several instruments and vocals became involved with the song, we began to notice some points of indistinctiveness. Lastly, we proceeded testing the DJ for what it is intended to be used for. Club mixes “Satisfaction” and “Cherry Twist” put emphasis to the DJ’s bass strength, though we felt it was a little bit subdued at times.

Based on its features and audio quality, we can confidently say that the Aurvana DJ is a decent pair of cans for audio enthusiasts and those who are entering the clubbing business.

I saw in the Internet that the price of the DJ is $99. Is this the standard price of a "clubbing" headset?

Prices of DJ headsets relatively vary depending on the brand. Boses are definitely pricey.
