2.4 Times The Printing Advantage: All Thumbs Up For Original HP Inkjet Cartridges

littlelion | 18 August, 2009 14:14

Over three months ago, HP Philippines, through the Imaging and Printing Group (IPG), had invited us to a press briefing in which the company made a comprehensive discussion about the value that users, individual customers and business owners alike, can gain from making use of original HP ink cartridges. What was important about the said meeting were the meaningful figures that HP showed us, drawn from the recent study that they held in collaboration with QualityLogic.

As if their target audiences were still unconvinced about the magic that original HP ink cartridges can bring, HP carried out another valuable study, this time, working in partnership with TÜV SÜD PSB Pte Ltd, a Singapore-based firm specialized in product testing, inspection and certification services, and has a sterling record of over 30 years.

Similar to the previous study, the battle is still stuck between original HP ink cartridges and those remanufactured alternatives, together with refilled ones. The study was designed to evaluate the page yield and reliability of HP branded inkjet cartridges versus 14 brands of non-HP cartridges. The test group was comprised of countries that are based in the Asia Pacific region, including Australia, China, India, Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

For the test methodology, HP 45a and HP 56a black ink cartridges and HP 78a and HP 57a tri-color cartridges were used on 17 HP DeskJet 5650 and 24 HP DeskJet 930C inkjet printers. HP Everyday Paper (A4) was used for all printing in this study.

To test against original HP inkjet print cartridges, 962 third-party cartridges were selected from three main categories:

1. Branded remanufactured cartridges. Cartridges that were sold under a brand name and remanufactured using expended HP cartridges or from parts procured elsewhere. Five brands were selected for the test.

2. Refilled cartridges. Comprised of exhausted cartridges that were brought to refilling shops for reuse. These cartridges were further divided into two main types:

• “Organized” refilled cartridges. Cartridges refilled at stores that had a widely recognized brand name and sold through multiple outlets. Five brands were selected for the test, and refill outlets were randomly selected.

• “Unorganized” refilled cartridges. Cartridges refilled at stores that had no widely recognized brand name. Four brands were selected for the test, and refill outlets were randomly selected.

After the dust settled, the research came up with the following numbers that inkjet printer users should take into account before spending their hard-earned money on remanufactured and refilled ink cartridges:

25.7% of remanufactured and refilled ink cartridges were dead on arrival or had failed prematurely.

None of the HP cartridges tested were dead on arrival or experienced premature failure.

On average, cartridges refilled at the organized and unorganized refill stores only produced 41% the number of pages.

On average, original HP print cartridges produced 146.7% (2.4x) more pages than cartridges refilled at the organized and unorganized refill stores.

On average, branded remanufactured cartridges only produced 63% the number of pages compared to original HP print cartridges.

On average, original HP print cartridges produced 59.8% more pages than branded remanufactured cartridges tested.

On average, remanufactured and refilled cartridges only produced 48% the number of pages compared to original HP print cartridges.

On average, original HP print cartridges produced 106.6% (>2 times) more pages than all remanufactured and refilled cartridges tested.

Unquestionably cheaper than original HP ink cartridges though, users should also ponder that patronizing remanufactured and refilled ink cartridges are associated with hidden, substantial costs at all times. Hence, with remanufactured and refilled ink cartridges, the risk of ending up on the losing end is not impossible.

Convinced? Assuming that hundreds of words were still not enough to plead your case, allow us to get our message across concisely and wind up the discussion with a couple of quick-witted videos:

Additionally, in line with their campaign encouraging more consumers to patronize original HP ink cartridges, HP Philippines had launched the HP Go the 2.4 Distance raffle promo. Two lucky loyal users of HP-branded ink cartridges brought home a brand new Toyota Corolla Altis with 2.4 years worth of free gasoline from Petron.

Now that’s what we call a real advantage!

That's true. Inks remain very expensive nowadays. I think, only those individuals and companies who have a lot of money can really invest on original inks.
