ASUS P7P55D Deluxe Motherboard: Welcoming The New Era Of Intel Core i5 Processors

littlelion | 03 August, 2009 15:50

Every time that we see an unboxed motherboard from ASUS, specifically those which belong to their high-end category, there is always the expectation of awesomeness. Auspiciously, that expectation was satisfied when we set our eyes on the new ASUS P7P55D Deluxe motherboard.

The ASUS P7P55D Deluxe motherboard is fully optimized to support the latest Intel Lynnfield processors in LGA1156 package (Intel Core i5), which apparently are not yet available in the wild. With that said, excuse us for not having any numbers yet to present. For now though, we encourage you to join us as we take a closer look at this ASUS motherboard.

Without an abundant set of accessories, the P7P55D would appear undeserving to be a part of the ASUS Deluxe family. Hence, included in the package are the manual, support DVD, USB-eSATA combo module, SLI bridge connector, 2-in-1 Q-connector kit, IDE cable, backplate, TurboV Remote, and six SATA cables.

Here is a view of the P7P55D as a whole. From this point of view, one could already sense the generous amount of features that ASUS had thrown in on this motherboard. At the lower right hand side of the board, conspicuously seen is the large, flat heatsink, underneath which the new Intel P55 chipset rests.

A cornucopia of interfaces is found at the back, comprised of the legacy PS2 ports, clear CMOS switch, eight USB 2.0 ports, coaxial S/PDIF out port, optical S/PDIF out port, two Gigabit Ethernet ports, IEEE 1394a, and 10-channel high definition audio jacks.

 The Realtek 8110SC chip.

Close to one another are integrated chipsets: Realtek 8110SC for dual Gigabit Ethernet; VIA VT6308P for IEEE 1394a; and VIA VT2020 for 10-channel high definition audio.

The relatively daunting CPU region bears a resemblance to a futuristic fortress surrounded by heatsink walls and an army of ferrite chokes and solid capacitors. Given such a resilient line of defense, potential buyers are guaranteed with durability and long lasting performance.

This is how the processor socket looks once the load lever and plate are lifted.

Heat is further dissipated away from the processor, ferrite choke, and solid capacitors with the help of ASUS Stack Cool 2.

Four DIMM sockets are all ready to accommodate up to 16GB of DDR3 memory modules with up to 2133MHz memory clock speed under overclocked settings.

Near the DIMM sockets and the main power supply connector is the MemOK! switch which allows the motherboard to automatically determine failsafe settings when installing or upgrading the memory modules.

Still within the vicinity of DIMM sockets, we caught a glimpse of the CPU/IMC/DRAM overvoltage setting switches which enable users to activate or deactivate the advanced CPU, IMC (Integrated Memory Controller, and DRAM overvoltage settings in BIOS.

For future expansion, the P7P55D integrates a trio of PCI-Express 2.0 x16 slots, two PCI-Express 2.0 x1 slots, and two PCI slots. With the Intel P55 chipset built in, the board is capable of supporting NVIDIA SLI and ATI CrossFireX configurations. While the manual does not say if the board can support triple SLI, it affirms that triple CrossFireX is possible. Quad-GPU setup is also supported for both graphics technologies.

For storage, onboard are six SATA connectors, which are supported by the Intel P55 chipset, and the 40-pin IDE connector.

Just a few centimeters away, we found three more SATA connectors but this time, they are supported by the JMicro JMB322 and JMB363 chipsets which are intended for RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10 storage configurations. Furthermore, seen in this photo are three onboard connectors for USB headers as well as the control panel, where you can insert the supplied Q-connector kit.

Onboard POWER ON and RESET buttons are placed alongside the three USB onboard connectors. These are actually useful when one is working on the overclocking bench.

At this point, we are already keyed up about seeing Intel’s Lynnfield processors, and our excitement is further amplified when we saw the ASUS P7P55D Deluxe motherboard. Even though we were unable to see how it could have possibly performed in our test bed, we can say that the P7P55D is one of the worthiest options to take into account once the new chips are officially out.

Is this compatible with Intel Core i7?

Comment Icon Great features

Eddard | 06/08/2009, 10:22

@ ranjit
Yes, it is.

There's a cool feature that was not mentioned - the lack of latches on one side of the memory slots. Instead, the slots are shaped to hold the stick of memory in place, while it is locked into place on the other side. Pic 10.

Nice work! Need more specs and features in the article.

Yeah. You will never find a soft copy of the P7P55D's manual as this is not out yet.

I can't wait seeing a Core i5 processor. Yet, it is going to be expensive certainly.
