On two separate occasions, Hewlett-Packard Philippines gave us a clear vision of the roadmap it is taking as a company which continuously and devotedly puts into practice its social and environmental responsibilities.
Through its two major business branches, the Imaging and Printing Group (IPG) and the Personal Systems Group (PSG), HP shared its aspiration of empowering the different strata of the local community, from entrepreneurs down to students, to create a sustainable environment for the future.
HP Eco Solutions For Printing
Supposedly, HP IPG should have sent us, along with other members of the press, to Singapore. But to practically eliminate the carbon footprint that a business trip may incur, IPG representatives banked on HP’s latest remote networking technologies, setting up a conference call instead. Led by HP Asia Pacific and Japan Vice President for Marketing Ms. Ivy Liang, HP showcased its array of eco-friendly printing solutions that caters to individual printer users and large enterprises.
First among the solutions presented was the updated
Carbon Footprint Calculator for printing, a downloadable application that allows customers to evaluate and reduce the environmental impact of their printing activity. With a user interface that provides more graphics and charts, users can easily comprehend the information gathered by the
Carbon Footprint Calculator. Eventually, the data can be used to formulate better strategies to save consumables and cut waste.
Additionally, in response to overwhelming customer demand, HP is launching New Change Management Kits, a series of toolkits to help customers implement best environmental practices across their organizations. These kits also aim to communicate the financial and environmental value of such practices to internal stakeholders and employees.
For big companies, the HP Managed Print Services is a total printing solution that allows business owners to manage their print environment, depending on their requirements, with HP’s comprehensive host of printer technologies, supplies and maintenance services.
Companies such as 3M, Viacom, CH2M HILL and others have already realized the benefits of acquiring the HP Managed Print Services agreement.
Based on an exclusive study, HP estimates that commercial and large-format printing worldwide release a mind-boggling amount of 850 million tons of carbon dioxide to the environment.
Recognizing the gravity of these printing activities, HP IPG encourages companies, as well as individuals, to switch from analog printers to digital printers. By doing so, the current carbon footprint can be trimmed down by 251 million tons by the year 2020. In addition, HP put stress on the usage of eco-friendly and recyclable consumables, among of which the HP Latex Inks and the HP Indigo ElectroInk 4.0.
HP My Backyard In The Philippines
Just a few days after our private meeting with the IPG representatives, HP Philippines, this time with the PSG, brought us to the Center of Excellence (CENTEX) in Tondo, Manila where they staged the local launch of HP My Backyard. The said campaign aims to boost the youth’s awareness about the environment, driving them to actively participate in building greener and cleaner communities.

Present during the affair was HP PSG Senior Vice President for Global Marketing Mr. Satjiv Chahil. Expressing his ideas about the HP My Backyard campaign, Mr. Chahil said, “HP believes that technology plays a vital role in education. CENTEX's newly¬renovated computer room will certainly enable students to leverage on the power of technology not only to help them meet the demands of schoolwork, but also allow them to share ideas on how to best care and save Mother Earth.”
HP Philippines PSG Country General Manager Ms. Bernadette Nacario added, “Amid rising environmental concerns in the Philippines, there has been an increasing need for environmental consciousness especially among our young people. It is good that through HP's My Backyard project with the help of CENTEX students, we have shown that even little things can make a big difference.”
Through the My Backyard advocacy, HP has also funded the construction and development of a new computer room for CENTEX to enhance and empower students through education. The new digital classroom hosts robust HP technologies including HP printers, HP Pavilion PCs, and an HP TouchSmart PC.
The CENTEX students were also given the opportunity to meet some of the Filipino achievers, who have brought great pride for the country, as proud advocates of the HP My Backyard campaign. They are:
Journey’s lead singer Arnel Pineda,
and Mr. Pure Energy himself, Gary Valenciano.
By and large, as one of the world's largest IT companies that puts premium on environmental responsibility, HP, through its Eco Solutions for printing and My Backyard project, hopes to encourage and empower every one of us to be actively involved in creating a greener and more sustainable environment for generations to come.

Good to see HP doing such things. I wonder though how far they go after the media blitz is done. Is it all for show, or do they actually sustain these things?
