ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1008HA Netbook Launch: Setting Up The Summer Peak Mood

littlelion | 25 May, 2009 13:36

We’re already in the dénouement of summer and just a few days from now, we will be officially entering the wet season. Even so, ASUS seemingly doesn’t pay attention to such weather trends. In fact, the Taiwan-based computer company has just set the mood of a blooming summer atmosphere during the launch of the ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1008HA at the InterContinental Manila hotel last week.

Obviously, we were neither in Boracay nor El Nido, but ASUS made certain that our near-beach experience was complete with the presence of white sand, poi dancers and of course, gorgeous ladies.

In addition, we were entertained with the enchanting performance of Ms. Sitti Navarro, the Queen of Bossa Nova of the Philippines.

After spending some time and lending our ears to the relaxing bossa nova rhythm, the excitement spiked again as all eyes turn to models laying bare the new ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1008HA, one at a time.

We moved closer to get a better view of the ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1008HA. Here are the photos:

Present during the local launch of the Eee PC Seashell 1008HA were (third from left) ASUS Philippines Marketing Manager Mr. Jason Teh, Country Manager Mr. Cedric Chang, and Systems Product Manager Ms. Michelle Tan.

Appreciatively, right after the event, ASUS lent us one of the Eee PC Seashell 1008HA netbooks. As soon as we hit our office, we wasted no time and began giving the netbook the once over it deserves.

With an area nearly the same as a copy of HWM Philippines and a weight of 1.1Kg, the ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1008HA is certainly an embodiment of portability that mobile users definitely expect from a netbook.

The significant improvement on the ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1008HA puts emphasis on its design inspired by, as what does its moniker clearly imply, a seashell. Though the model we received is clad in a glossy black shell, the Eee PC Seashell comes in other tasteful colors as well, such as white, blue, pink, sapphire and ruby red.

The well-spaced keyboard facilitates faster typing speed.

Within the compact confines of the Eee PC Seashell, it is powered by a dual-core Intel Atom N280. Complementing the dual-core chip is 1GB of DDR2-400 SO-DIMM RAM that can be still upgraded. Logically, there is a boost in performance on this netbook. Hence, you could expect this netbook to handle more applications at the same time better than those models with the single-core N270 processor.

Pressing Fn + Spacebar allows you to underclock and increase the netbook’s processor speed. Shown below are the netbook’s varying CPU clocks under four different circumstances. So, if you would like to get the most out of the Eee PC Seashell, now you know which setting must be chosen.

Power Saving – 850MHz
Auto High-Performance – 1000MHz
High Performance – 1000MHz
Super Performance – 1019MHz

Software-wise, our model comes with Microsoft Windows XP Home. Nonetheless, customers may opt to have it installed with GNU Linux OS. Prominent in this screenshot is the Eee Dock which serves as a quick launcher dedicated for ASUS pre-installed applications.

Under the Eee Arena tab, clicking the Game Park console would lead you to an interface in which you could launch casual video games such as Alice Greenfingers and Chicken Invaders 2. If these are not enough, other free, downloadable games on offer are just waiting to be clicked.

Still under the Eee Arena, the Eee Download brings you to a website where you could download additional productivity tools for the Eee PC. Nevertheless, most of the applications here are not for free.

Going on to the next tab, which is the Eee Sharing, the most significant tool here is the Eee Storage. In addition to the netbook’s ample 160GB hard drive space, the Eee Storage bestows 10GB of Web-based storage. The Eee Storage is accessible in the My Computer panel as well.

Worth mentioning on the third tab is the Eee Splendid Video Enhancement Technology, an assimilation of a proprietary feature which was once found only on some high-end ASUS LCD desktop monitors and notebooks. This innovation enables you to adjust the picture quality of the netbook’s 10-inch LED-backlit LCD depending on your eyes’ desire.

If you would like to alter the opacity and position of the Eee Dock on your desktop, simply explore the Eee Tools tab.

As the beginning of the rainy season also marks the start of a new academic year, ASUS throws in the ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1008HA as a respectable and timely selection that is worth considering for students. Students aside, professionals who hate carrying around hefty laptops would appreciate it as well. The ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1008HA crams all the basics of a full desktop computer into one stylish piece to keep its user productive and entertained, regardless of time and place.

Now that the NVIDIA ION platform is out, perhaps, ASUS could go ahead and upgrade the capabilities of their Eee PC line.

An Eee PC using the ion platform realizes the idea that netbooks can play HD as well.
