The Price Is Right: Only Original HP Cartridges Can Provide Authentic Value

littlelion | 15 May, 2009 12:10

Printing has always been a serious business for HP. It is no monkey business and that is why HP’s Imaging and Printing Group (IPG) is relentless in promoting the use of original consumables with HP printers to consumers and business entities. But in a society like ours, in which falsehood has been a mordant part of reality, how does HP IPG handle the ordeal? HP makes a solid response by presenting some important figures that small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) should ponder upon.

Collaborating with QualityLogic, a world-renowned firm with more than two decades of experience in printer and MFP testing, HP conducted a region-wide research comparing the reliability and print quality of original HP 10A and 42A monochrome LaserJet toner cartridges with that of remanufactured counterparts.

The test group was comprised of 2,500 SMBs that are based in Asia Pacific. Countries that were covered under this research include Malaysia, India, Philippines, China, Thailand, Korea, Hongkong, Singapore, Taiwan and New Zealand.

Interestingly, the tests revealed that 25 percent of remanufactured toner cartridges were dead on arrival (DOA), failed prematurely or low quality, while no original HP toner cartridges had reliability problems.

Input from 31 business laser printer users used to create a psychometric scale of page acceptability that QualityLogic page inspectors then used to inspect pages. Laser printer users were from a range of industries and company sizes.

Additionally, in terms of print quality, almost 1 in 3 pages printed by remanufactured toner cartridges were not acceptable for all use. This record was overwhelmed by HP toner cartridges’ positive rating of 96 percent.

Extracting an analysis out of QualityLogic’s findings, HP found out that SMB customers actually pay up to 31 percent more in total costs when they use remanufactured cartridge brands, compared to original HP LaserJet toner cartridge.

Taking into account that all other variables are equal, the table above presents that remanufactured toner cartridges is obviously cheaper compared with original HP toner cartridges. Nonetheless, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Eventually, the usage of remanufactured toner cartridges is more costly as it incurs expenses associated with cartridge replacement, paper reprint, labor and others.

Apart from their long-term negative effects on SMBs’ economy, remanufactured toner cartridges leave direct and indirect effects on environment as well. According to a study conducted by InfoTrends, four out of five remanufactured toner cartridges sold will be thrown away after use. In due course, they become a major pollutant in the environment. Also, frequent paper reprint with these consumables causes increased electric consumption of laser printers. Hence, more carbon dioxide is emitted to the atmosphere.

On the other hand, original HP LaserJet toner cartridges offer reduced environmental impact, incurring 84 percent less carbon dioxide in reprinted pages or the equivalent of 49 liters of oil, compared to remanufactured cartridges.

For SMB customers that print in high volumes and want to enjoy greater value and reduced printing costs, further cost savings can be achieved with HP Dual Pack LaserJet cartridges (models Q2610XD and Q5942XD) that offer up to 31 percent cost savings over standard HP LaserJet Print Cartridges. Put them into consideration to reap the authentic value that only original HP toner cartridges can offer.

Our company has a lot of used HP toner cartridges. Does HP recycle them?

As far as I know, HP has its own recycling program. You should try calling them.

I think the recycling program is one of the highlights of HP Total Care.

If original cartridges are really more economical than the remanufactured ones, why does CISS remain popular?

That's why HP is educating consumers about the "real" costs between Original cartridges vs. remanufactured/refilled ones. :)

I think PC World has had a comparative study comparing OEM inks and remanufactured ink.

I tend to believe them more.

Sometimes that really is the difference for a small home office. If they have just this budget for printing, they would settle for the next best thing after the original. And with the technology improving, it is no wonder that remanufactured "appears" to give more value for money.
