Commentary: Toasted Batteries for Breakfast

Yanko Design is at it again, and their utterly useless combination of a toaster and battery charger design is utterly interesting and compelling. Getting ready for your day? Skip the breakfast and charge up all of your electronic doohickeys with this fanciful little gadget, and you’ll still get the fulfilling sensation of “toast” popping up and satisfying your hunger, but only in your mind of course.

Though only a concept for now, I definitely would not mind having one or two of these for my gadgets, if only for the whimsical nature of it all. Pop in a battery, and the design is (supposed to) adapt to the battery through multiple contact points that is compatible with the majority of batteries. Once the lever is pressed down – what did you expect? Wait for your “toast” to pop back up.

What’s wickedly interesting is the toast-shaped indicator light telling you just how far into the process of charging, or “toasting” your battery you are – from slightly warm to perfectly browned-at-the-edges. This process corresponds to the indicator’s color change from white to golden-brown colored, at which point your battery pops up and you get to eat it. Or rather pop it back into your device.

Although it’s not mentioned in Yanko’s site, this device would make a lot of sense if they somehow incorporated into it a kind of ultimate cutting-edge technology  fast-charger that’s compatible with any and all batteries, making the device all the more convincing with 2-minute charging that coincides with the toasting time of an actual piece of bread.
