Commentary: Casio's 2" Wonder is Eminently Watchable

eddard | 26 September, 2008 18:09

I can get pumped up by the smallest of things, if its about tech or gadgets. In this case, the device I’m talking about is literally very small – a two inch LCD panel made by Casio. Two inches you say? Surely the 150” monster over yonder makes your blood pump all that much faster? Well if put that way, then I’d just have to clarify that this little ‘ole 2” screen is as exciting a development as the 150” monster. How so? Read on to find out.

You'd think that the above title had a typo, but in fact, while this pictures looks like that of a huge screen, it's in fact only 2" - but sports 546 ppi.

This 2” screen is amazing not only because of size, but because of the number of pixels it packs into the small space available to it. This screen boasts of 546 ppi (pixels per inch) which equates to a tremendous 960 x 540 resolution, or what Casio likes to call “QHD” for Quarter High Definition.

                                             That's a pretty small elephant...

To put these numbers into perspective – take your typical 10” netbook display that’s standard in many portable PCs sold these days – these typically have a 1024 x 600 resolution, meaning 614,400 pixels on that 10 inch space. The Casio on the other hand crams nearly that many pixels (approximately 518,000) onto a screen that’s much, much smaller. Imagine – if this technology gets applied to a similar 10” screen – we are talking about 2,592,000 pixels, or in other words, nearly 1080 HD resolution!

Soon we will have devices similar to the PS, but with super high-definition screens. Put a third party magnifier on top, and we're all set for big-screen, portable gaming.

Realistically, this type of screen will most probably find its way onto portable devices such as PDAs, phones, and camera preview screens – 2 to 4” is the proper size for these. In this case, HD resolution for your handheld is very attractive – for one, magnification of these small screens becomes an attractive option, and another, previews for your pictures will look exactly the same as the actual picture – these and every other obvious advantage you care to name for a super high-resolution, albeit small screen.
Pixel density is the new talking point, and Casio seems to be way ahead of the pack. Watch out for these little 2 to 4 inch beauties to pop up on your favorite manufacturer’s products in the near future – if you can drag your away from that beautiful but hardly portable 150” screen in the corner.
