Commentary: Fountain of a Hundred Flavors

eddard | 01 September, 2008 16:24

Are you spoilt for choice? Ever had the quandary of choosing between caramel flavor or mocha flavor? Well, Coca-Cola is about to make things all that much harder for the indecisive, and everyone else who happens to be standing behind them waiting to make their own purchase. I am referring to Coca-Cola’s plans to introduce a vending machine that is able to produce 100 different flavors of soda.

Now, this is exciting news, but we here in the Philippines may need to hold on to our horses for just a bit longer, as the machine is intended for introduction into the US market, hopefully only as an initial stage. Right now we are making do with a maximum of perhaps 10 flavors, but not from a vending machine – we still have to rely on the gal or guy behind the counter of our favorite fast food joint to get the goods for us. There are vending machines out there already selling strange drinks and flavors, but this will be one of the first of its kind, using “cartridges” of concentrated juice to mix with soda and dispense into a cup.

Soon, this 8-valve dispenser will seem archaic andchoice-limited.

In the meantime, if you can’t wait for this veritable bevy of choices in one place to come here, then we can only offer the next best thing – your supermarket beverage isle. All kidding aside though, this number of choices from a single machine is going to play havoc with cafeteria, waiting room, water-cooler, and fast-food waiting-customer lines – perhaps Coke is also planning to implement some kind of time limit for the customer to make a choice? Or at least a button that chooses a random flavor out of the hundred, so that it has that small bit of amusement included for those who simply can’t decide. Following are some Coke products that may (will!) make it to the 100-flavor fountain.

And my favorite!

(No, there's no actual Bacon-flavored Coke, but it's probably uhhh.. viable... for those with unique tastes).
