Anyone who remembers “Back to the Future” can be dated quite neatly as an “80s” baby, which isn’t such a bad thing. It was a golden age of iconic paraphernalia that includes the Lucas films and the resurgent Indiana Jones.

For children of that generation, there are some items that brings out the geek in us – in this case we’re pointing to Marty McFly’s (played by Michael J. Fox) cool looking high-top sneakers – those self lacing, futuristic-looking fashion statements that Marty donned just before hopping onto a hoverboard.

Nike is set to release the Nike Hyperdunks, whose design is based on these movie props of the 80’s this coming July. Unfortunately, there is no self-lacing mechanism involved, although Nike is making a big deal of the super-lightweight materials used in the shoes. The shoes will be available in black, and the spokesperson for the pair is none other than Kobe Bryant, who actually wore a pair during the NBA Finals.

Even with the lame name (hyper?!?) these shoes will probably curry enough street cred with its kitsch background, even more so than being backed by Kobe. Now this is probably just the first step, hopefully someone will be looking into the Back to the Future trilogy for more props to bring to life. Can’t wait for a hoverboard, or better yet, a flux-capacitor installed in a modern car.
