Commentary: HTC Advantage X7510 Strikes a Balance

It’s always difficult to strike a balance. That’s why we have lawyers dividing “white” right and “black” wrong into a million different shades of grey. HTC attempts to stick to one particular shade of grey with the release of the Advantage X7510, and its up to you whether this product is right or wrong for you.

The X7510 is an almost- PDA, not-quite-a-laptop creation by HTC, famous for its touch screen handhelds and phones like the Tytan and Touch Dual. Its most defining feature it its 5-inch, 640 x 480 screen, which puts it squarely between the PDA’s standard 2.5 to 3.5”, and the UMPC’s 7-9 inches. One is tempted to classify this device as a MID (Mobile Internet Device), yet HTC gives no such label to the device, preferring instead to leave it to the public to decide what it will be used as.

HTC equipped this model with the majority of current bells and whistles both from the communication and the mobile computing camp, and in doing so has enabled the X7510 to make its own way with the mobile productivity crowd. A Marvell PXA270 624MHz processor plus a Qualcomm MSM 6275 processor, 256MB ROM, 128MB RAM, tri-band HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, GPS, 5-inch VGA, and 3 megapixel camera is joined in this updated version (from the original Advantage) by a flash-based 16GB drive, a slim, haptic keyboard with larger buttons, and what HTC calls a “future version” of Windows Mobile, which should mean Windows Mobile 6.1

Notable features include HTC’s trademark VueFLO accelerometer for web browsing, coupled with HTC’s touch screen functionality, gives the user good flexibility when browsing and reading. HTC ExtUSB with USB 2.0 support can be used for charging and syncing, plus for connecting HTC’s proprietary 16-pin port for USB 1.1 host, especially usefull for connecting USB flash drives and other USB-based external devices. To top everything off, the X7510 can function as a phone even if it is not designed to be placed against your ear like a regular cellphone.

For specific-use buyers, this device is a bit too much in a too large package. It can’t be an option for the super-compact crowd, but at the same time hosts many functions that can prove a boon to the data-centric, on-the-go buyer who can’t be bothered to bring along a laptop. With a large screen capable of displaying the most data at one glance in this size, and the tools, utilities and features for easy manipulation of this data, the Advantage X7510 lives up to the name, and will prove to be just right to a lot of lawyers out there (and other professionals, I’m sure).
