As exciting, cutting-edge technologies go, the 3M developed mini projector made for handphones is a mixed bag. Nearly as small as a regular camera mechanism found in current handheld devices, this unit does exactly as its name implies – projects media onto a (preferably) flat surface.

3M mini projector module.
Like any tech-addicted guy or gal, just its size is enough to get me just a wee bit excited, never mind that I can’t, off the top of my head, think of any task I can use this on. Sure, the concept of having a handy projection device in your pocket is appealing, and I can certainly see the possibilities when I think of it a bit, but if this device starts off with quality in the same range as the first cameraphones, then you can count me out.

This portable projector is no match for the 3M model, performance-wise comparison remains to be seen.
The technology will certainly advance, but for now, this is more a gimmick and less a “feature” for a handheld device, especially considering its projected added cost of $200 to $400 for whichever phone’s it’s going to be added to. On the plus side, the device will certainly be better than lugging around an actual projector, even the “portable” kind – if the quality of the mini-projectors can reach tolerable levels. To be fair, there has been no actual test / reviews out for the units, so we can’t say for sure whether they will perform well or not. Samsung is set to be the first to release a handset or add-on using this device later this year.

A "regular" projector - soon to be on your cell-phones!
If this development pans out, expect it to be a step closer to the holy grail of portable devices – light weight coupled with a large screen – this will provide stiff competition to touch-screen devices and fold-out screens.
