Commentary: Laptops Need Their Privacy Too

eddard | 22 April, 2008 15:08

If Dr. Seuss wrote on a Macbook Pro and was born a few decades closer to the present, this wouldn’t be too out of place. As it is though, this “Body-Laptop Interface” is too much of a good thing – privacy, and too little of something else – err.. street-cred? Regardless, I wouldn’t want to sport that “Interface” in public, on-the-go productivity be damned.

                                             Watch out for overheating laptop!

I would think that most people would be too style conscious to even think about getting something like this to use during their commute / coffee break adventures at the local WiFi – hotspot, but then again you never know, with practicality sometimes taking over any stylistic sense one may posses. This is not the first wacky, wearable design we’ve encountered, but this is by far the most striking example.

Fortunately or unfortunately, this little piece of kit is not for sale, nor is it being manufactured -  best guess is that it was knitted by an industrious little lady who valued her youtube time over the indignity of sprouting an overgrown knit-cap from your head and being (almost) permanently connected to your laptop.

Relax (?) and sit back while enjoying utmost privacy.

Other concerns include the fact that you won’t know what’s going on around your immediate space, and this doohickey is pretty impractical in our local climate. Maybe the makers should have included some built in security pockets where you could stash your stuff as you typed, plus a cooling fan or two for a local version. This Body-Laptop Interface isn’t all bad though – If those sleeves and hood look as tight as they seem, they will serve as added incentive to keep working, since you can’t remove your eyes and hands from the laptop. Besides, it’s also pretty anonymous.
