Commentary: Video-Game Brushing

eddard | 08 April, 2008 18:25

Ever felt like your daily routine’s weighing you down? Think how much worse it is for kids, with their never-ending schedule of schoolwork, piano lessons, basketball games, and doting parents insisting on the best care they can afford for their kids.

A daily chore not always appreciated nor enjoyed.

This care may soon include some high-tech teeth coddling by a seemingly complete multimedia set for your bathroom: a device that acts similarly to a Wii-mote, a webcam, an LCD to be mounted in front of your bathroom mirror, a computer, and special software to tie everything up into one nice package. What does it do then? Basically, the setup can be used to help your kid brush better and take better care of their oral health.

Your kid wants one last game before bedtime? By all means-

The system works by tying up a child’s (or an adult user, for that matter) wrist and hand actions through the trackable-LED toothbrush component (never thought I’d get to say something like this in a blog review) to the computer software while displaying a graphical, game-like representation of the “cleaning action” through the LCD display. The webcam tracks the brush movement through the LEDs, making it possible to “show” the tooth-brusher which tooth and which parts of the mouth has already been cleaned.

LED lights make the experience even more child-friendly.

The graphical representation functions similarly to a simple game, wherein the objective is to “clean-up” the dirty invaders/enemies/nasty bacteria to reveal clean, white teeth, a much more satisfying experience than listening to mom or dad talking about the virtues of having some clean ivory munchers or whispering about trips to the dentist.

The system is discrete (relatively), and it can after all replace all your bathroom magazines when not on teeth-cleaning duties.

According to the Taiwanese university research team, kids were found to be brushing correctly (and thoroughly) – which is in my opinion a good enough reason to put up with the inconvenience of having a webcam in the bathroom (oh my), not to mention having some not inconsiderable number of electronics near running water/steam/brushing kids. Never mind the fact that the system will still give a “perfect score” even if you forget to put on the toothpaste before cleaning up the graphical teeth.

"Rainbow colors" is the new "plaque".

P.S. Apologies for the picture quality; these were taken from the research team's Youtube video of the device, and it is currently in the reasearch stage.
