Commentary: "Protection" for The Desktop Gamer

Realism has long been an elusive goal for our games and game producers. It is true that many advances has been made in the visuals department of almost any game shipping today, and sound is a strong point of games, especially FPS types. While our eyes and ears are saturated, the rest of the body is left alone. With the FPS Vest, this no longer holds true.

For the SWAT in all of us.

The FPS Vest is a sleeveless pull-over shirt with integrated pneumatic actuators placed in strategic areas around and over your torso. It simulates hits, explosions, punches and kicks from the direction it comes from in-game, that is, when your avatar is hit, you will also feel a force feedback effect from the general area the hit came from. Of course, there are no lethal hits, but it will surely make your chosen game all that more immersive.

For the Ranger in all of us.

Retailing for P7000 thereabouts online, it comes with two games – Third Space Incursion and Call of Duty 4 – which is the real draw here. Buying these games separately would amount to forking over around P3500 (for original software), so the aforementioned price for the vest is more than reasonable. Another (doubtful) positive for this product is its design – it looks like what a special operations team member would wear to war. Just don’t forget to remove it before you go out on a date. (Or a war, for that matter, this flak vest certainly doesn’t protect as well as the real thing.)

An acutal flak vest used in Iraq.

This is a neat idea, and all that’s left to make the gaming scene even more realistic are actual explosions, or failing that, something right out of science fiction – emotional activants that will make your blood boil and your senses be immersed inside the game world. Now where’s my BDU’s?
