Commentary: The Ultimate Movie Prop

eddard | 26 February, 2008 17:34

Movie buffs and uber-geeks rejoice! The quintessential walking, “talking”, lovable movie prop is back, and it’s re-doing its more / most famous scene in the Star Wars franchise: serving as a projector. I am of course, talking about R2-D2.

If it walks and "talks" and slots into a Tie-Fighter, I'll be all over this!

This little hunk of metal and plastic (high-tech plastic of the 80’s, mind you) had a defining role as the carrier of Princess Leah’s message for the general Kenobi, asking for help. For the time, the projected image-onto-thin-air trick was pretty impressive. It’s actually still impressive up to now, seeing as nobody actually’s been able to make a projector that shows a 3-D image without requiring a screen or flat surface.

Still in the production stages, but I wouldn't be surprised if all of the 1000 copies are spoken for.

Unfortunately, this iteration does not exactly perform the same kind of stunts as the movie original, as this R2-D2 can’t project onto thin air either, much less 3-D images. It’s still a blast seeing something like this “in-the-flesh” though – so to speak, and it will surely draw attention in any home or office setting – office setting only if you’re a company similar to Google that is. But with a limited number of copies – 1000 to be exact, it’s doubtful you’ll be able to get one once you get over the asking price – P170,000 thereabouts.

Make sure the girl's a Star Wars fan before trying to impress her with these.

Need more convincing to consider owning this movie icon? How about the chance to pair it up with some Tie-Fighter speakers, or the fact that it comes with a Millennium Falcon remote control? Aside from the slip-up on placing the projector in R2’s head lens unit instead of in the body like in the movies, this whole setup oozes street—err I mean geek-cred. Own this, and get oohs and ahhs for more than your home videos. Own this, and watch your relatives and your relative’s kids go green with envy. Own this to go broke, but then again, you already knew that and don’t care right? More pictures to follow.

                                             Yep, that's the R2-D2's remote.
