Commentary: Tech Is Where You Find It

eddard | 12 November, 2007 12:05

I don’t know how the Toshiba press people keep straight faces when they announce this latest news, but there you go – Most Eco-Friendly Instant-Heating Toilet Seats. Only from and for our friends in Japan.

                                             Looks aerodynamic... oops! wrong review...

If I hadn’t read the whole thing at least once I’d have thought it was a joke, or at least a concept. Apparently, the company has recognized a need for the said product and has spent the requisite research funds to develop and deploy this wonderfully unique device.

A "hi-tech concept" for outfitting the most important room in the house.

The toilet seat will feature a bidet (water nozzle) with a water heater attached. What’s special about this is the fact that no water is pre-heated; water is instantly heated when required. The toilet itself is designed to retain as much heat as possible, (the seat itself is also heated) – all for the express requirement of saving energy and electricity bills. The seat has a sensor that opens and closes the lid when required, and even includes a remote control so that no actual contact with the toilet is required.

Now that the incredulity has abated a bit, I realize that all of this is not such a bad idea – right up there with reading on the loo, and singing in the shower. Who doesn’t want the ultimate conveniences when you do your daily routine? The downside is once again of the time-sharing variety – who gets to use the bathroom first? Who gets to use it longest? It seems the bathroom is becoming as important in our high tech world as the living room and the bedroom – be it in regards to comfort or to entertainment.

it's the secret to success, if you know what i'm saying...

good to know we're sparing the planet from our junk to an extent, too.
