A Greener World?

littlelion | 20 July, 2007 18:59

Ever wonder what kind of greener world the Earth will be in the future? If what flashes on your mind is like Louis Armstrong's concept with "trees-are-green" in a "what-a-wonderful-world", I'm glad that you are very optimistic, but better see this...

Technology has gone astronomically and changes everything. Transforming people's lives and mutating the social landscape. Count in the way it has metamorphosed the face of the planet significantly. But in what way? Looking on the perspective I have presented, negatively. Gadgets become obsolete. Technology is superseded by a newer one. No question, we love the new gizmos coming in almost everyday. However, what happens to the computer parts, mobile devices, appliances and so on that were yesterday's celebrity but today's has been? They become e-waste: many of which have components that are considered toxic and are not biodegradable.

In light of this predicament, governments around the world with the cooperation of electronics and semiconductor companies, steps are made to lessen the scourge of e-waste on our planet. Part of the green electronic revolution, some countries have banned the disposal of electronic waste in landfills. E-waste processing and recycling industry are popularized in Europe. And by the virtue of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive) and Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) that were implemented as early as 2005, the poisonous components on electronic devices like lead, mercury and cadmium were lessened and even aimed to be completely removed.

In a more narrow perspective, we as individual geeks, are we doing something? Personally, I myself had re-assembled some obsolete computer parts that were supposedly, had gone to the junkyard, into fully functional PCs that some of my neighbors can use, somewhat a very meager contribution to the green electronic revolution against the colossal e-waste problem.

And I hope, my fellow geek, you are also doing your share
Smile

Remember, the Earth is only one and like no other. If it goes completely "obsolete", its hard to think that there will be "newer version".
