It's On, Caps Lock! Don't Go There Girlfriend!

Trins08 | 18 August, 2006 01:30

Waging real and trivial feuds will always be "in," regardless of work and interest. Just think of past and present events: Israel vs. Lebanon, Alien vs. Predator, Administration vs. Opposition, Nintendo DS vs. Playstation Portable, Kris Aquino vs. maltreated underage fans... we can go on and on aaaaaand on. Now here's another one for the tech world to take note of: Pieter Hintjens vs. the Caps Lock key.

In the online world, using the Caps Lock is synonymous with shouting, or putting extra (useless) emphasis on certain words to get their point across. Hintjens' point is very simple: the Caps Lock key, for him, is unnecessary, and he and his supporters want it either taken off the QWERTY keyboard completely. The movement is growing by the day, with various alternatives also given by his supporters for the besieged key.

So, it's your call. Are you going to join the fight or not?

If the Caps Lock could really be taken off, then it definitely would enforce the NO SHOUTING RULE or perhaps, in a far-flung possibility, benefit those who have HEADACHES from seeing pEoPLe TyPe LiKe THiS besides SAVING SPACE. (NeXt uP, tHe SHifT KeY ChaNGinG iNtO tHe nO-aLTeRnAtiNg-LeTTeRs KeY, the Scroll Lock, or the Number Lock!) Maybe, as another effect, they could also influence those who seem to frequently butcher the English language online. But then again, unique online jargon such as pr0n, teh, pwned, sukkz0rz, and general l33t-speak wouldn't be as much fun to decipher now, would it?
