Sanyo Xacti Dual Camera Launch: A Showcase Of World's Firsts

littlelion | 20 March, 2009 03:06

Way back in January, Sanyo announced six new models in their Xacti lineup: three in the familiar vertical hand-held design, and another three, surprisingly, in the horizontal design – a new look for Xacti. Launches were held in Dubai, Munich, Toronto, London, New York, Osaka, and Bangkok. Now it’s Manila’s turn to catch the fever. Held at their own home base in Makati, Sanyo Philippines gathered round the local press to witness and experience the new Xacti dual cameras, each acclaimed as a world’s first.

The best way to start an event is to greet everyone with a cheerful smile, just like what Ms. Karen Agustin, a former Bb. Pilipinas-Universe, did as the affair’s master of ceremonies.

Sanyo Philippines President and CEO Mr. Tetsuo Hirota gave us a glimpse of the company’s current roadmap and position in the market. Aiming to solidify Sanyo’s presence throughout the country, Mr. Hirota disclosed that one of the company’s goals this year is to increase the number of service centers from 84 to 111. Mr. Hirota also stressed that Sanyo is a Total Solution System provider, taking into account the company’s comprehensive range of products that caters to industrial, commercial, and residential needs.

Sanyo Philippines General Manager for Sales & Marketing Mr. Joseph Chua Jr. brings to the table the rationale why Sanyo proposes the concept of a dual camera. Looking at the bigger picture, Sanyo sees the huge disparity between the sales volume of digital cameras and camcorders worldwide. In order to minimize the gap, Sanyo introduces the dual camera as a new imaging device category which combines the best of both worlds. Thus, the campaign “It’s not just a camcorder, it’s a dual camera” is born.

Compact HD

Noteworthy, Sanyo’s lineup of Xacti dual cameras for 2009 is divided into three main categories, namely compact HD, waterproof HD, and full HD 60p. Each category is represented by a horizontal and, of course, a vertical, “gun-type” model, the form factor that made the Xacti label memorable.

The compact HD category is composed of models that are capable of HD video recording at 1280 x 720p resolution.

Moving on to the main stars of the event, let’s begin with the VPC-TH1. Sanyo touts it as the world’s smallest HD camera with 30x optical zoom and with the longest battery life found in its class. Sanyo offers it at PhP 24,995.00.

Acclaimed as the world’s highest resolution HD dual camera, the VPC-CG10 is the epitome of Xacti’s slim and compact design. It carries a lens with 5x optical zoom, takes up to 12-megapixel photos and HD videos at 1280 x 720p resolution. Its suggested retail price is PhP 22,995.00.

Waterproof HD

The local launch of the waterproof HD dual cameras is just in time! Now with these new, hydrophilic models, you have more reasons to get wet and wild this summer!

Perfect for summer gimmicks, the Xacti VPC-CA9 is the world’s first waterproof HD camera which allows you to shoot underwater down to depths of 1.5 meters (5 feet). Price starts at PhP 29,995.00.

Another waterproof model is Sanyo’s own version of the yellow submarine – the Xacti VPC-WH1. Hailed as the world’s first waterproof camcorder with 30x optical zoom, it can go deep down to depths of 3 meters (10 feet). Sanyo quotes PhP 34,995.00 for one of these.

Full HD 60p

Much larger and better equipped compared to the compact HD models, the Xacti Full HD dual cameras can record videos at 1920 x 1080 resolution (in both 1080i and 1080p formats).

The Xacti VPC-FH1 is the world’s smallest Full HD horizontal form factor dual camera. It features a high speed sequential shot function, takes up to 12-megapixel photos, has a 160x digital zoom for video and a 100x digital zoom for photos.

Last but not the least, Sanyo’s latest flagship model, the Xacti VPC-HD2000, happens to be the world’s first consumer camera that feature true progressive HD recording (1920 x 1080p at 60fps). This dual camera is capped with a price tag of PhP 54,995.00.

Sanyo also introduced its new set of Brand Ambassadors who further proved the versatile design and superior image quality of the new Xacti dual cameras. Weeks prior to the launch, Sanyo handed over the Xactis to these gentlemen to conduct a test. Eventually, they showed to us the spectacular photos and videos that they got using the dual cameras. Shown from left to right are Mr. Francis Rivera, one of the industry’s most sought after advertising photographers; Mr. Melvyn Calderon, a world-renowned photojournalists; Mr. Raffy Santos, a photographer and one of the minds behind the design of the SMX Convention Center; and Mr. Minco Fabregas, an accomplished filmmaker, musician, painter, and actor.

I see the reason why those horizontal camcorders are more expensive than those pistol-grip camcorders: it's all about the lens.

IMHO, those horizontal camcorders are too boxy, especially the yellow one.
