Beware Of Cellphone Scams!

LordM | 05 March, 2007 16:12

While you guys may think/say that "Oh, that won't happen to me!" I would just to take this opportunity to share some scams that happened to some people I know...

Feel free to discuss other scams that you know after reading this entry. Hopefully, by doing this, everyone will be able to keep their eyes open and will be vigilant should they come across a scam or two...

1) The You Won 300,000 Pesos Scam

The Modus Operandi: A person "representing" a well-known mobile phone service provider will text your mobile number "informing" you that you won 300,000 pesos in their raffle. After calling them up to "confirm" your winnings, they will tell you to first send them via text the CALL CARD and PIN NUMBERS of twelve (12) 300 peso load so that you can immediately claim your winnings in their main office.

After sending them 3,600 pesos worth of load, the "representative" will then tell you that you can claim your 300k in the main office. They will, of course, give the main address of your mobile phone service provider. As soon as you get there, you will then find out that the person who contacted you does not even work for their company, making you look like a complete idiot.

2) The Return My Load Scam

This scam is relatively new as I have just encountered this a few days back.

Modus Operandi: A Globe Prepaid or Postpaid will get a message that goes something like this:

From: +639XXXXXXXXX

100.00 worth of prepaid credits was loaded to your mobile# (insert your number here) on (this day) XX:XX. Trace number 747277970. Load na anytime dahil may P15 AMAX na!

After receiving this LOAD, you will then get a message that goes something like this:

GudPM. Mam/Sir pls return and send in bak d 100peso u reciv 2day. Nwr0ng send lang po yan load sa number nyo po. Sa tindahan po ito at may nagpa eload kasi d2.

The person then texts you again:

Ds s mrs. Reyes at sa cavite po ito mam/sir sari sari eloading store kami. Namali lang p ng padala ung 100peso load diyan sa number nyo kanina po.

And once again:

Pls nkkiusap p kmi d2 na pakisauli nlang po ung 100 via share a load pr0ces po. Sana maintindihan nyo po kami d2 sa tindahan.

3) May Sasabihin Ako Sayo Scam

Modus Operandi: You will receive a text with this message:

May sasabihin ako sayo importante. Please call me or send me 5 pesos load para makareply pa ako sayo.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

If you are not vigilant enough, you'd probably send off the 3,600 load, "return" the 100 peso load, or even send 5 pesos worth of load. Problem is, these are all ploys of scammers to mooch as much money from everyone as possible, making this the perfect con.

Imagine this: If 20 people sent 5 pesos worth of load to the person who wants to talk to you, then that person easily earned 100 pesos just by sitting his/her ass out. See? How easy is that?

"Kung walang magpapaloko, walang manloloko!" Now, do indulge us with your comments and tell us what other scams you've encountered so that these people will no longer use mobile phones as a source of income.
