Mobile Phones Increase Risk of Infertility

LordM | 25 October, 2006 15:59

Men beware! According to a new study, men who use their mobile phones often increases their risk of infertility.

According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, those who made calls from their mobile phones for more than four hours a day had the worst sperm count and the poorest quality of sperms. Doctors said that this is probably due to the electromagnetic radiation or heat from mobile phones.

US researchers, along with doctors from India looked at men who were undergoing checks at fertility clinics and found that their sperm count was significantly lower than those who have never used a mobile phone.

They also said that:

The men with highest usage (of cellular phones) also had greater problems with sperm quality, with the swimming ability of sperm - a crucial factor in conception - down by a third. They had a 50 per cent drop in the number of properly formed sperm, with just one-fifth looking normal under a microscope.

While this may be an extreme case for us Filipinos (as we do not usually use our mobile phones for a long period of time), our habit of sending text messages is probably even worse.

According to the article, while sending text messages uses less power than talking on the phone, it can have an even more intense emission of radiation. This, together with the fact that we usually put our cellular phones in our pockets, will probably spell disaster for men.

So now the question is this: If the study is true, and if more and more people buy cellular phones, will there still be a generation "next"? I sure hope so.
