Events: Asus Eee At The Turning Point

eddard | 31 July, 2008 16:22

Asus has reached a turning point, or perhaps point of realization, with their release of the Eee PC 1000(H) Netbook. With this release Asus has breached the middle-range baseline of the netbook market and once again attained breakthrough specs for the market’s first and favorite netbook PC.

Events: LG Scarlet "Sexiest TV" Launch

eddard | 29 July, 2008 18:01

Significant releases of large displays are fewer and farther in between than say, cellular phones or cameras, and when a new display series is released, it’s usually a simple “refresh” or some minor tweaks or changes in the looks department rather than anything momentous, which makes it much more of a surprise that we were able to witness a launch of something truly spectacular, or at least is aiming to be something more than a refresh of current product lines.

Commentary: Aptera Typ-1: If Looks Could Kill...

eddard | 28 July, 2008 15:55

Have you ever seen a tricycle and gone “wow”? Or perhaps given a thumbs-up to the driver for the sweet ride they have. Well you probably have not; after all “tricycles” here mean “basic transportation” with 125cc motorcycles welded onto steel sidecars. Now then - this is your chance to do exactly so and proclaim your approval of a tricycle – specifically with the Aptera Typ-1 electric or hybrid car.

                                              Not your typical tricycle dashboard.

Commentary: The P4500 "Eee PC" Look-Alike

eddard | 28 July, 2008 14:38

Think you got the best deal when you got your 2G Eee PC? Or perhaps your Astone-with-a-cellphone netbook? Well prepare to have your smugness dashed against the reality of China’s ever inventive PC manufacturers: the Jointech JL7100 is but a third of the price of the original price champ the 2G "Surf" Eee PC.

Preview: Asus Extreme Rampage: An Overclocking Forte

eddard | 25 July, 2008 18:36

The Asus Extreme Rampage first tickled my fancy with its cheesy, toys-for-boys name, but that impression soon dissolved when I laid eyes on the slick heatpipe system and menacing black visage of the demo unit sent to us for review and testing. And I don’t mind saying, this is the first in a long while that we tested the overclocking capabilities of a motherboard to any great length – the features, technologies, the sheer number of marketing catch-phrases and even the “Designed for Overclocking” imprinted all around its box will make it a crime to not spend some quality time trying to burn down our test bench’s components.

Spotlight: The LG Secret Is Out!

eddard | 24 July, 2008 19:04

The week I spent harboring a Secret was one when I couldn’t help but reveal that same Secret to everyone I met – family, friends, strangers. Sensationally slim, the LG KF750 Secret backs up lust-inducing looks with a heftiness and performance that gives other cellphones, in most product categories, a run for their money.

Commentary: Dancefloor Power!

eddard | 23 July, 2008 18:34

In the bid to capture energy from all possible sources, this has got to be one of the most logical yet – the Power generating dance floor, or the “Dancefloor Power”. (It seems to be more appropriate if its name had an exclamation point at the end, but I digress.)

Commentary: SenseSurface: Virtual & Physical Manipulation

eddard | 21 July, 2008 16:05

Everything’s coming together nicely. With the incessant march of innovations, updates, improvements and most importantly (for this entry at least) convergence, new gadgets are increasingly stuff that combines disparate technologies and make them work together in ways that give our twitchy, geeky hearts a workout. Fancy a touchscreen but want more “physical” method of interacting with the on-screen action? This “coming-together” of LCD touchscreen, sensor, and virtual reality technologies result in the SenseSurface – a new level of convergence for the virtual and the physical.

Events: Western Digital My Passport Launch

eddard | 18 July, 2008 17:19

It’s notoriously difficult to write about a rectangular slab of metal and plastic which simply sits in your PC and only gets notice when it breaks down or otherwise does not work properly. Thus it was a pleasure to be able to be so enthused with a dozen such slabs of goodness during the recent Western Digital press event held at Tropezz in Greenbelt 2 Makati.

Preview: The Essential RedFox WizBook

eddard | 18 July, 2008 16:47

Variety is the spice of life, or so they say, but only if that spicy something tastes right on the tongue. Then again, perhaps being different is seemingly enough of a draw that local desktop and notebook manufacturer Red Fox has created the WizBook, specifically the 10-inch model.

The RedFox WizBook. Yes, the battery protrudes from the main body.

Mod: Thermaltake DuOrb VGA Cooler Swap!

eddard | 16 July, 2008 16:19

It’s not often that modders are content with the out-of-the-box experience - in most cases changes and add-ons are implemented to either improve the looks, performance, efficiency or usability of a product. In the case of the Thermaltake DuOrb, only a single point was improved from stock, and even that point depends on the modder’s taste.

Commentary: Clove 2: Alternative Input

eddard | 14 July, 2008 15:47

Gesture-based input devices are nothing new, yet what makes the Clove 2 typing glove device so admirable is the fact that it was created and programmed for as a hack , and by a single person. Aimed at the multi-tasker, this device enables the user to type using only a single hand, while the other appendage is occupied at say, grabbing a fistful of chips or your favorite mug of liquid refreshment.

For hardcore modders and geeks only!

Commentary: A Laptop-Full of Screen Space

eddard | 14 July, 2008 15:18

You can only get so many configurations of a certain form factor before people start to lose interest. Witness the recent lapse in Asus’ Eee900 sales forecast, probably due to the multitude of Eee PC types coming out (and its competitors of course). So it wouldn’t be far off the mark to say that new form factors will generate an appreciable amount of interest and in some cases, controversy.

Spotlight: Logitech Z-10: 2.0 and No More

eddard | 11 July, 2008 19:05

The Logitech elicited a lot of comments from your reviewer right from the get-go, then again Logitech products almost always does. As someone who owns a Logitech Z-5300 5.1 speaker setup and uses it for daily computing, I was the natural choice to review the unit. This turns out to be true, but not for all the reasons you’d expect.

Logitech stands for shiny black, desirable products.
