Commentary: The Geeky Scrooge & Father Christmas

eddard | 21 December, 2007 13:31

It’s almost Christmas! If we were to follow the popular song’s instructions everybody would be getting golden rings right about now. As it is, I’d prefer five modules of DDR memory, preferably 1GB in size. Are you listening Santa?

Preview: Asus P5N-T Deluxe Fills A Gap

eddard | 19 December, 2007 17:11

My geeky little heart was performing parabolas of joy when I first saw a motherboard with the 780i chipset, represented by the Asus P5N-T Deluxe. Although supposedly delayed until early next year, our friends at Asus were able to secure for us what looks like a retail product of this new Nvidia – based motherboard.

Commentary: A 30" LCD For Your Portable Device?

eddard | 17 December, 2007 16:29

We’ve been encountering news of a number of flexible screens based on “e-ink” and plastic substrates, but flexible color displays have been on the scene only a few months. The examples available are still nowhere near the color gamut and performance of standard LCDs, but improvement is constant, plus cost doesn’t seem to be a problematic factor.

Imagine bringing this along somewhere. I can't.

Commentary: Moste Potente Invention

eddard | 17 December, 2007 15:58

What invention of the last century would you reckon to be the most used, in the most numbers, by the most people, the most often? The telephone? Nah. How about wheeled transportation? Perhaps, but not in sheer numbers. To find the “most” invention, we need to get much, much closer – down to the microscopic levels in today’s technologies.

Only half of the "core" consist of transistors, the other half is the cache. 300+ million transistors right there.

Spotlight: Gigabyte G-Power II Pro Balances Out

eddard | 14 December, 2007 18:01

This product caught my eye immediately - and as with any consumer item, that’s already half the battle. The Gigabyte G-Power II Pro boasts of an extravagant wing-shape and chromed design that looks fabulous, so the only thing left to determine is how ell such a unique design can perform.

This is the price of being the first in the Philippines to have the G-Power II Pro.

eddard | 12 December, 2007 10:12

I’ve been fortunate in being able to review Zotac videocards consecutively over the past few months; partly because of the brand’s quality and workmanship, but primarily due to the unique opportunity it presents me in the form of direct comparisons and as validation for our benchmarking and testing procedures.

Full size hardware - full length and double-slot cooler.

Commentary: The Correct Way To Unlock An iPhone

eddard | 10 December, 2007 16:41

Please note: This entry is entirely satirical, not that most bloggers know the difference between fact and satire. No need to sue me, multi-billion dollar multi-national companies, I have nary a cent to hire a lawyer or give a damn – you can’t get a penny off me anyways.

An iPhone was harmed in the taking of this picture.

Commentary: Aibos In Crime

eddard | 10 December, 2007 16:34

The Sony Aibo (“partner” or “friend” in Japanese) was a huge success, but not in financial terms. Sony pulled the plug on the tech-adorable creation early 2006 after they filed their quarter 3 2005 report. Seems like Sony needed to streamline a bit, and the first thing to go was the dog. Typical.

Preview: Team Goes Xtreem For Enthusiasts

eddard | 07 December, 2007 17:58

I was not aware of the memory brand Team until a chance meeting with one of our partners brought it to our attention. Now it seems it was remiss of me not to research more into the brand, as it is setting record upon record in the hands of many enthusiasts who go after the ultimate speed crowns of the computing world.

Team has seemingly come out of nowhere to claim multiple awards and performance firsts.

eddard | 06 December, 2007 17:30

There are always some things that are indefinable when shopping for a product – it’s not always specifications, price, performance and brand that are considered by consumers. This train of thought came about after I set eyes on the Genius Ergo 555 Laser mouse.

Commentary: Virtual Reality - The Early Stages

eddard | 03 December, 2007 14:48

We’ve all seen or heard about those old “VR” concepts and movies, of which TRON is the best known. Of late a number of products claiming “VV”, or Virtual Vision, have been popping up on the technological scene. These products and the popular VR movie fodder of yore pointed to a concept of “full experience” in addition to the more traditional “vision-based” system of entertainment / experience.

Commentary: GPS: Where To Start?

eddard | 03 December, 2007 14:25

Ever seen a viable car-based GPS system installed in one of our ubiquitous jeeps? Of course not, right? For one, the directions and ever-changing one-way streets are already installed onto their own experience and memorization-based navigation systems, and no technological solution will be able to keep up with constantly-changing landscape of our road network. But one has to start somewhere, yeah?
