Dream No Further

Comprehensive controls on the projector itself.

You get every output option, except for DVI.

Two wheels for horizontal and vertical lens shift.

Just when it seems single-chip DLP projectors are about to win the bout to become the projector of choice for home entertainment, LCD projectors, equipped with higher contrast ratio and black levels, are staging a comeback to reclaim lost grounds. Take the Epson Dreamio EMP-TW600 as a prime example; at a price that is considerably lower than large LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and PDP (Plasma Display Panel) televisions, it is one of many new LCD projectors that are fast becoming the most cost effective and visually satisfying system for enjoying DVD movies at home. Best of all, it is also ready for upcoming High-Definition (HD) content out of the box with resolutions scaling right up to 720p.

Put It Anywhere... Well, Almost Anywhere.

Because the 5.2kg Epson Dreamio EMP-TW600 is a 3LCD projector, its dimensions are expectedly larger than most single-chip DLP projectors, and it doesn't help that it is white in color, which tends to make it appear even larger than it really is. Knowing how the concern of its bulk and weight might affect positioning, the lens on the EMP-TW600 is designed such that it can be shifted both horizontally and vertically, which means users can freely position the projector almost anywhere in the room. Since it is not a short-throw projector, the minimum throwing distance of 0.88m would have to be observed.

Good Set Of Attributes

With the exception of a DVI connector, the EMP-TW600 will pretty much mate any video source you care to throw in its direction, and with HD broadcast not too distant on the horizon, investing in an EMP-TW600 will be a timely addition to your home entertainment setup. Its 5000:1 contrast ratio and a native resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels also means output from HD consoles such as the Xbox 360 and PS3 will both be displayed gloriously.

To ensure users can easily bring out the best in the EMP-TW600 projector, Epson has packed in a multitude of advance adjustments and color controls ranging from simple brightness control, white level tuning, color temperature, individual RGB color adjustments to gamma correction. These are all accessible via the projector itself or through the bundled remote control that has backlighting to assist you in making the necessary adjustments. So while business projectors have the upper hand in mobility and ease of setup due to their compact dimensions and light mass, it is home theatre projectors like the EMP-TW600 that can really boast cinema quality colors and brilliance where home entertainment truly matters.

Brilliant Video Quality

Unlike the harshness of business LCD and single-chip DLP projectors, the default video quality of the EMP-TW600 was found to be just right, and thanks to the improved "Epson Cinema Filter" and 10-bit color processing that is capable of reproducing up to 1.07 billion colors, color reproduction was spot on and vivid. Sharpness was neither too artificially sharp nor puffy around the edges and these characteristics combined to produce video quality that was very smooth and film-like.

Our Thoughts

Though the US$2,095 sticker price of the EMP-TW600 might put some people off, it is actually not asking for the moon if you compared the price against a large LCD or PDP television unit. Consider that the price also includes a one-year warranty, a lamp life of 3,000 hours and that it has so much to offer in terms of screen size, colors and visual enjoyment, you are actually looking at a project that is great value for money – although you'll only get to see the 'value' at night or if you happen to have a specially prepared darkroom to enjoy the Epson EMP-TW600 3LCD projector.
