A Classic Masterpiece

A 3.13-megapixel camera with auto-focus and even some manual settings to boot!

80MB RAM not enough? The microSD slot is at your disposal for further memory expansion.

The Samsung SGH-D900 is the slimmest slider phone out now, but packs great features.

Slim has been the magic word for manufacturers lately. This is due to the advancement of technology as well as consumer's desire to have portable, yet aesthetically pleasing and significantly lighter gadgets. While some companies create slim multimedia players, others like Samsung prefer to create mobile phones that can be considered as masterpieces. The new Samsung SGH-D900 follows its predecessors by being a thin slider, but also sets itself apart with new hardware.

Same Old, Same Old

The SGH-D900 uses a similar piano-black façade as its other siblings, emanating a sophisticated and classical feel to it. The volume control buttons and the microSD slot can be found on the left side of the unit, whereas the headset/adapter jack and camera hotkey button are situated on the right side. Sliding the phone reveals a well designed and laid-out keypad. It is also soft to the touch and responsive, making it easy for anyone to use the unit.

Sliding open the D900 also exposes its camera sensor at the back of the unit. Upon closer inspection, you will notice that the phone boasts a powerful 3-megapixel sensor, topped with a built-in flash too. The way the camera was built is quite clever, as the casing protects the camera whenever the unit is closed and slid back down.

Mood Phone

Upon switching it on, the first and most obvious thing about the D900 is its 'interactive' wallpaper. No, we're not talking about simple animated gif wallpapers. The scenery changes depending on various situations: when it's a cloudy day, it means that the unit has no signal. The scenery also changes from day to night (and vice versa) in real time.

This means that if you try to access your phone at 9pm, the phone has moon and stars on its interface. In addition, either a plane flies by (morning) or fireworks light up the sky (evening), to remind users if he/she has an unread text message or a missed call. All of these things come together with the D900's rich 2.1-inch 240x320 QVGA TFT LCD display, breathing life into the whole unit.

The Powerful Slider

The software running the D900 is no small fry, either. Besides the ability to play music, videos and Java games, surf the Internet (using the pre-installed web browser) as well as print photos wirelessly via PictBridge, the D900 also has powerful business features like TV-output and the Picsel File Viewer document reader. Through this program, almost any file type can be opened on the phone without the worry of corrupting the phone or file. We have uploaded files in Excel, Word, PDF, and plain text formats onto the phone to check. True enough, the phone faithfully opened every file and was able to display the content properly.

Of course, the package is incomplete without the ability to take breathtaking photos with ease. Besides the whopping 3.13-megapixel onboard sensor, functions like auto-focus, adjustable ISO settings (100, 200, and 400), flash settings, and exposure metering (spot, matrix, and center weighted), and white balancing ensure that the first shot will be the best shot, all the time. Despite the fact that it takes a while to process the snapped photo (around 5 seconds for maximum resolution setting), photos were quite clear and had minimal noise.

Final Thoughts

Samsung has done it yet again with the new D900. They've held on to a formula that works well for consumers (slim slider form factor), while giving them a whole lot of extras to boot. We definitely recommend this to anyone who wants a classic phone that can second function as a powerful, all-round multimedia device.
